Appalachian State 76, UTEP 72
CONWAY, S.C. -- O'Showen Williams had 19 points and hit two late free throws to help Appalachian State hold off UTEP 76-72 in Sunday's seventh-place game at the relocated Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
Ronshad Shabazz added 12 points for the Mountaineers (3-2), who lost to Iowa State and Western Michigan on the first two days of the tournament.
Tyrell Johnson hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:49 left, while Williams made two free throws with 5.9 seconds remaining after the Miners had pulled to within 73-72. Appalachian State then fouled to prevent Tulsa from attempting a tying 3.
Keith Frazier scored 25 points to lead UTEP (1-3) despite playing two days after rolling his right ankle in a loss to South Carolina. UTEP had lost to Boise State in the opening round.
Coastal Carolina 89, Iona 84
NASSAU, Bahamas -- For the second time in as many days, Zac Cuthbertson established a career high as he scored 31 points and missed just three of 14-shot attempts and Coastal Carolina downed Iona 89-84 on Sunday in day three of the Island of the Bahamas Showcase.
On Saturday, Cuthbertson established career highs in points and rebounds with 23 and 12 respectively in an 80-67 defeat against Vermont.
Iona led 78-76 with 2:17 to play when Rickey McGill made a 3-pointer. Cuthbertson followed suit doing the same thing 16 seconds later. McGill responded with a 3-point play off a layup with 1:38 to go and Matt Lindsey reduced Coastal Carolina's deficit to two (84-82) again with a 3-pointer. Demario Beck made a pair of layups, the second of which resulted in a 3-point play and the Chanticleers never trailed again. Cuthbertson added a pair of free throws to end the scoring.
Beck made all six of his shots and finished with 16 points, Lindsey and Artur Labinowicz each scored 13 and Jaylen Shaw had 10 for Coastal Carolina (3-2).
McGill finished with 23 points for Iona (1-4), Zach Lewis and E.J. Crawford each scored 14 and TK Edogi had 13.
South Alabama 54, St. Peters 49
UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Rodrick Sikes scored 13 points and Jordan Andrews finished with 11 points and South Alabama held off Saint Peter's 54-49 Sunday night in a game marred with personal fouls and turnovers.
After a cold-shooting first half after which South Alabama led 24-21, the Jaguars used a 16-8 run for a 40-29 lead after Nick Davis converted a 3-point play off a layup with 12:05 remaining. Nick Griffin made a 3-pointer to bring Saint Peters within 40-34, but Kevin Morris responded with 3-point play on a lay-in, Rozelle Nix added a layup and Jordan Andrews buried a jumper and the lead went to 47-36 with 7:41 to go.
South Alabama made just one jumpshot after Andrews' basket and was able to keep Saint Peters (1-3) at bay. The Jaguars collected 19 personal fouls, made just 15 of 43 shots (34.9 percent) from the floor and turned it over 21 times.
The Peacocks tallied 20 fouls and shot 16 for 57 (28.1) from the floor. Sam Idowu led the Peacocks with 10 points.
