Chants Take Down 16th Ranked Charlotte
Conway - Coastal Carolina scored three second-half goals in defeating 16th-ranked Charlotte 3-2.
Charlotte scored the lone goal in the first half on a Marco Sunol-Romas shot from Teddy Chaouche in the 17th minute.
After being outshot 9-2 in the opening 45 minutes, the Chants came out with a renewed spirit and kept the pressure on the 49ers the entire second half.
That pressure finally paid off in the 71st minute when Miguel Guiterrez found Alex Ierides on the right side who blasted a shot into the back of the net to even the game.
CCU didn't let up as the Chants kept control of the ball and in the 79th minute Morten Timm took a cross from Henrik Mueller to give CCU a 2-1 lead.
The energy for both teams picked up again over the next 11 minutes, but CCU's Romario Piggott took the ball down the middle of the field past the 49ers defenders and blasted in the third goal in the 87th minute, and what turned out to be the match winner, for CCU.
It only took a little over a minute for the visitors to kick in a loose ball in front of the CCU net with Sunol-Rojas getting credit for his second goal.
Charlotte had one more chance in the closing 10 seconds to score, but a point-blank shot from the 49ers missed the mark and CCU pulled out the win.
Charlotte only managed four shots in the second half, and finished the game with 13, while CCU had nine second-half shots and finished with 11.
Braulio Linares-Ortiz finished the match with four saves while playing all 90 minutes.
The final game of the current three-game home stand will be Saturday Sept. 9 when CCU will host Radford at 7 p.m.
