Thomas late 3 gives Georgia State 79-75 win over Arkansas State
ATLANTA -- Jeff Thomas nailed a 3-pointer in the final seconds as Georgia State took a late lead and held on for a 79-75 win over Arkansas State to even its Sun Belt Conference record on Saturday afternoon.
The teams swapped the lead throughout the game until Thomas hit the trey with 32 seconds remaining to go ahead 75-72. Devin Mitchell made two free throws to extend the lead to 77-72.
Arkansas State's Ty Cockfield banked in a 3 with 11 seconds left to close to 77-75. Isaiah Williams responded with two free throws to secure the second straight conference win for Georgia State (11-6, 2-2).
D'Marcus Simonds led the Panthers with 33 points, making 4 of 7 from distance to finish 12 of 20 from the floor. He also grabbed nine rebounds. Williams added 12 points and Devin Mitchell chipped in 11. Thomas scored 10.
Deven Simms had 24 points and Cockfield added 14 for Arkansas State (6-11, 1-3), which has dropped three straight games.
Williams hits late 3 to lead Appalachian State 79-73 win
MONROE, La. -- O'Showen Williams drilled a 3-pointer in the final minutes and Justin Forrest added a late layup to secure Appalachian State's 79-73 win over Louisiana Monroe in Sun Belt Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
UL Monroe was up 37-34 at the break and pushed its advantage to 54-43 early in the second period. Appalachian State chipped away at the lead until Isaac Johnson made two free throws for a 72-71 advantage with 2:10 left. Williams followed with his trey and then added two free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.
Brown's buzzer-beating 3 lifts Georgia Southern to 72-69 win
STATESBORO, Ga. -- Tookie Brown hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Georgia Southern a 72-69 victory over Little Rock on Saturday night.
Cameron Corcoran had driven the lane and scored to tie the game for Little Rock (4-13, 1/3 Sun Belt) with 18 seconds left. Brown worked the clock before letting loose with his game-winner.
The Eagles (12-5, 3-1) made their final three shots in the last 2:28 after going 1 for 13 over an eight-minute span, allowing the Trojans to come back from a 10-point deficit and take a three-point lead on Andre Jones' dunk with 4:17 remaining.
Trailing by a point, Georgia Southern went on a 17-3 run, including six straight points from Montae Glenn, on its way to a 37-31 halftime lead.
Brown scored 15 points and Quan Jackson 14 for the Eagles with Jake Allsmillerchipping in 11 and Ike Smith 10. Glenn had 10 rebounds with nine points.
Oliver Black scored 15 points, Corcoran 14 and Jones 13 for Little Rock.
UTA evens Sun Belt record, beats South Alabama 91-67
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Johnny Hamilton scored 18 points with 12 rebounds as five UT Arlington players scored in double figures as the Mavericks evened their Sun Belt Conference record by dominating South Alabama 91-67 on Saturday.
Hamilton was 8 of 11 from the floor. Kaelon Wilson drilled 4 of 6 from distance for 19 points and Kevin Hervey finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for UT Arlington (11-6, 2-2).
The Mavericks took a 40-32 lead into the break. Hervey drove for a layup and Erick Neal followed with a 3-pointer as UTA scored 15 unanswered points to lead 58-38 at the 13:51 mark. They pushed it to 75-54 with 8:07 remaining and cruised to the win.
UTA shot 48 percent (31-64) while holding the Jaguars to 21-of-66 shooting. The Mavericks won the rebound battle 52-34 and outscored USA 44-18 in the paint.
Rodrick Sikes and Herb McGee had 16 and 14 points respectively for South Alabama (8-8, 2-2).
Peacock's putback sends Texas St. past Troy 57-56
SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Alex Peacock's lay-in off an offensive rebound with four seconds to play lifted Texas State to a 57-56 win against Troy on Saturday.
After Troy called timeout, B.J. Miller drove a wide-open lane but missed his layup at the buzzer.
Peacock, who finished with nine points, gathered in the offensive rebound off a missed 3-pointer by Nijal Pearson, who scored 13 points but was 5-of-17 shooting. Immanuel King scored 12 for Texas State (10-7, 3-1 Sun Belt).
Peacock's basket was the first field goal for the Bobcats since Eric Terry's layup with 5:21 left gave them a 55-49 lead. For its part, Troy got four free throws from Alex Hicks and a pair of free throws from Miller with 22 seconds to go for a 56-55 lead.
Jordon Varnado scored 17 points, Wesley Person scored 12 and Hicks grabbed 11 rebounds and scored 10 for Troy (7-10, 1-3).
Louisiana dispatches Coastal Carolina 81-64
LAFAYETTE, La. -- Frank Bartley IV hit four 3-pointers and scored 22 and Bryce Washington added a double-double to lead Louisiana to an 81-64 victory over Coastal Carolina on Saturday night.
Washington finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Ragin' Cajuns (14-3, 4-0), who are off to their best start in Sun Belt Conference play in four years. Malik Marquetti scored 17 for Louisiana, which made a living at the free-throw line hitting 29 of 33 attempts (88 percent). Johnathan Stove added 16 points to help the Ragin' Cajuns win their 10th conference game in a row.
Louisiana has won four straight and 11 of 12.
Zac Cuthbertson totaled 23 points and seven rebounds to pace the Chanticleers (7-10, 1-3), who dropped their third straight. Demario Beck chipped in with 14 points and seven boards, while Jaylen Shaw scored 13 with five assists. Coastal Carolina made 12 of 18 at the free-throw line.
Louisiana outrebounded the Chanticleers 38-28 and led from start to finish.
