No. 5 South Alabama defeats No. 4 Appalachian State, 3-0

FOLEY, Ala. - Junior Briana Morris had two assists and a goal as fifth-seeded South Alabama knocked off No. 4 Appalachian State, 3-0, in the opening round of the Sun Belt Women's Soccer Championship on Wednesday at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala.

Sophomore Abi Mills started the scoring for the Jaguars (8-9-1) in the 40th-minute off an assist from Morris. Just a few minutes later Morris' second assist found the net off a shot from sophomore Ana Helmert. Helmert's shot found the back of the net on the right pass Applachian State's Taylor Ray.

USA freshman and Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, Brenna McPartlan, missed a great opportunity early in the second half with a penalty kick that sailed just above keeper Ray and the goal.

Morris would finish the scoring for the Jaguars in the 58th-minute off an assist from freshman Tilly Wilkes. Wilkes' shot caromed off of Ray and Morris collected and knocked it in on the rebound.

USA outshot the Mountaineers (9-9-1) 26-10 in the contest and had seven corner kicks to App State's four.

With the win South Alabama advances to Friday's semifinals and will take on the winner of Wednesday's quarterfinal between top-seeded Texas State and No. 8 Troy.

Wednesday's shutout by USA marked the eighth consecutive shutout from the Jaguars in Sun Belt tournament play.
