BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State men's basketball got the 2018-19 season, presented by AutoStar Nissan, off to a strong start with a 125-62 victory over Mars Hill in the season opener on Tuesday night inside the Holmes Center. The 125 points are the second most points the Mountaineers (1-0) have scored in program history, trailing only a 135-point output last season against Toccoa Falls. In addition, App State has now won its last five home openers under head coach Jim Fox and scored over 100 points in the last three seasons.
Georgia State 74, East Tennessee State 68
ATLANTA – Georgia State opened the 2018-19 regular season defeating East Tennessee State 74-68 Tuesday night at GSU Sports Arena, capped off by a Damon Wilson 3-pointer and Jeff Thomas break-away dunk that turned a one-point Panther lead with under a minute to play into a six-point victory.
Coastal Carolina 91, Ferrum College 47
CONWAY, S.C. – Senior forward Zac Cuthbertson scored 18 points to lead six Coastal Carolina players in double figures as the Chanticleers raced to an easy to a 91-47 win over Ferrum College in its season opener at the HTC Center. A preseason All-Sun Belt pick, Cuthbertson made 7-10 shots that included two powerful dunks and grabbed 7 rebounds before sitting out the final 10 minutes of action.
ULM 75, Jackson State 66
JACKSON, Miss. – Daishon Smith scored a career-high 24 points and Jontray Harris netted 12 of his 15 points in the second half to lead ULM to a 75-66 victory at Jackson State Tuesday, Nov. 6 in the season opener for both teams. Smith, who sat out last season after transferring from Wichita State, hit 6-of-8 shots from the floor in his Warhawk debut, including 5-of-6 3-pointers.
UTA 90, UT Tyler 66
ARLINGTON, Texas – Making his debut as a head coach, Chris Ogden's UT Arlington men's basketball team used an aggressive, up-tempo style of play to cruise to a 90-66 season-opening win over UT Tyler Tuesday night at the College Park Center. UTA's starting five all finished in double figures, led by a game-high 20 from Edric Dennis. David Azore tallied 15, Patrick Mwamba and Radshad Daviseach netted 13 and Brian Warren netted 11 as the Mavericks shot 43.7 percent from the floor (31-71).
Troy 90, Fort Valley State 65
Troy, Ala. – Senior Alex Hicks scored a game-high 19 points, leading Troy to a dominant 90-65 victory over Fort Valley State in non-conference men's basketball action at Trojan Arena on Tuesday night. The Trojans (1-0) shot 51.6 percent (32-of-62) from the field en route to winning their sixth consecutive home season-opener and their third consecutive under head coach Phil Cunningham's tenure.
Louisiana 121, University of the Virgin Islands 80
LAFAYETTE, La. – JaKeenan Gant and Malik Marquetti each scored 19 points to lead six players in double figures and the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns shot an impressive 67 percent in its opener as it earned a 121-80 victory over the University of the Virgin Islands on Tuesday at the Cajundome.
Auburn 101, South Alabama 58
AUBURN, Ala. – No. 11/12 Auburn jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first four minutes and went on to defeat the University of South Alabama men's basketball team 101-58 Tuesday night at Auburn Arena. The game was the season opener for both teams. It was the first meeting between the in-state schools since 2006.
