SAVANNAH, Ga. – Second-seeded Georgia Southern blanked third-seeded Appalachian State, 3-0, in the second semifinal of the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Soccer Championship at Floyd E. Morris Field.

With the win, the Eagles advance to the tournament’s championship match for the first time since 2014. That match, also played on Georgia Southern’s home field, was won 1-0 by top-seeded Hartwick.

The first goal of the match came in the 17th minute, fittingly in a matchup of the Sun Belt Co-Players of the Year. Georgia Southern senior midfielder/forward Javier Carbonell lined up for a penalty kick against Appalachian State senior goalkeeper Jake Chasteen. The Mountaineer keeper stonewalled the initial attempt, but Carbonell cleaned up the rebound that bounced off the crossbar and punched in the Eagles’ first goal of the night.

Georgia Southern’s second goal came in the 51st minute when freshman forward Adam Davie streaked down the middle of Eagles’ offensive end, gathered a pass from sophomore midfielder Aldair Cortes and closed with a left-footed finish for his sixth goal of the year. The assist was Cortes’ conference-leading seventh of the season.

The Eagles punctuated the win in the 87th minute as junior midfielder Sander Wang booted a rocket shot off a free kick for his first goal of the season.
