FOLEY, Ala. - South Alabama junior forward Claudia Gutierrez’s goal in the 50th minute on Friday at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex lifted the second-seeded Jaguars to a 1-0 win against third-seeded Georgia State in the Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Tournament Semifinals.
South Alabama (11-4-3) advances to its ninth all-time Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Tournament Championship Match. The Jaguars’ nine appearances in the title tilt tie former member North Texas for the most championship game berths. South Alabama will be vying for its eight Sun Belt Tournament Championship in the past nine years, dating back to 2013.
South Alabama will face the winner of fourth-seeded Georgia Southern and eighth-seeded ULM on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Gutierrez’ goal was her second of the season and came on an assist from sophomore Nora Sanchez less than five minutes out of halftime.
South Alabama was dominant in out-shooting Georgia State 30-3 in the match, including a 14-1 edge in shots on goal.
Both goalkeepers played the full 90 minutes. Maria Subies of Georgia State (9-4-7) charted 13 saves, while South Alabama’s Jaidy Campos recorded one save.
