MONTGOMERY
, Ala. – After an opening day dotted with upsets on Tuesday, the top-seeded teams took care of business in Wednesday’s pool play action at the 2021 Guardian Credit Union Sun Belt Baseball Championship presented by Troy University in Montgomery, Alabama.

No. 1-seeded South Alabama, No. 2-seeded Georgia Southern and No. 1-seeded Louisiana each secured victories in their pool play openers.

Game 5 – No. 1 South Alabama def. No. 6 Coastal Carolina, 14-7
Sun Belt East Division champion South Alabama prevailed in its pool play opener, 14-7, in a slugfest against reigning Sun Belt tournament champion Coastal Carolina. Junior outfielder Ethan Wilson went 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored to pace the Jaguar offense.

Nine different Jaguars crossed the plate in the win, with eight registering an RBI. South Alabama used a five-run rally in the bottom of the second to take a lead it would never relinquish and tacked on four runs in both the sixth and eighth innings en route to the final 14-7 margin.

Senior right-handed pitcher Miles Smith earned the win on the hill, while junior right-handed pitcher Jackson Boyd picked up the save in relief. With the victory, South Alabama moves to 90-60 in Sun Belt Championship play across a conference-high 42 appearances.

Game 6 – No. 2 Georgia Southern def. No. 5 Georgia State, 10-1
Georgia Southern downed in-state foe Georgia State, 10-1, in its first pool play contest at the 2021 Sun Belt Baseball Championship. Graduate student right-handed pitcher Tyler Owens tossed a gem for the Eagles, allowing just one run on two hits over 5.2 innings pitched to earn the win.

A solo shot from freshman catcher Blaine Marchman in the top half of the second gave Georgia State an early 1-0 advantage, before Georgia Southern responded in the bottom half of the frame. Graduate student second baseman Steven Curry sent a bomb over the left field wall to provide the Eagles pitching staff with all of the run support it would need—though the club added insurance runs in the third, fifth and eighth to leave no doubt in the 10-1 victory.

With the win, Georgia Southern improves to 10-7 all-time in Sun Belt Championship action.

Game 7 – No. 1 Louisiana def. No. 6 Texas State, 12-6
Sun Belt West Division co-champion Louisiana outpaced Texas State, 12-6, in its pool play opener to close out Wednesday action at Riverwalk Stadium. The Ragin’ Cajuns snapped a 20-year-old Sun Belt Baseball Championship single-game record with four triples in the contest—off the bats of redshirt sophomore outfielder Alex Hannie, junior first baseman Brandon Talley, redshirt junior second baseman Jonathan Brandon and sophomore shortstop Bobby Lada.

Louisiana used a two-out rally to jump out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back, tallying 12 runs on 13 hits. The Ragin’ Cajuns used eight arms in the game, with starter senior right-handed pitcher Jack Burk earning the win on the bump.

The victory was Louisiana’s 50th all-time at the Sun Belt Championship and runs the Ragin’ Cajuns record to 50-42 in 26 appearances.
