Marshall Closes Campaign With Five-Game Winning Streak, Myrtle Beach Bowl Victory

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Marshall extended its winning streak to five games to close out the 2022 campaign and halted a three-game bowl skid with a 28-14 victory over UConn in the Myrtle Beach Bowl.

The win was the first bowl victory since 2018 for the Thundering Herd, who are now 13-6 all-time in 19 Bowl Season appearances.

Marshall held a 21-0 lead at the break—on a pair of touchdown passes from redshirt freshman quarterback Cam Fancher to redshirt junior wide receiver Corey Gammage and sixth-year tight end Devin Miller and a 34-yard interception return by sixth-year defensive lineman Damion Barber Jr.

Gammage also picked off a UConn Hail Mary attempt in the end zone on the final play of the first half.

Redshirt sophomore running back Rasheen Ali ran the margin to 28-0 on the first drive of the second half—scoring his first rushing touchdown of the season in just his third appearance.

The duo of Ali and sixth-year running back Khalan Laborn—a First Team All-Sun Belt selection—combined for 182 rushing yards and a score, while Gammage led all Thundering Herd receivers with 50 yards and a touchdown catch.

UConn freshman running back Victor Rosa punched a pair of scores in from 14 and 24 yards out to pull the Huskies within two scores, 28-14. With UConn driving again, Marshall redshirt junior defensive back Micah Abraham, a First Team All-Sun Belt pick, sealed the Thundering Herd win with the third interception of the contest—the second to come in the end zone—on a UConn 3rd-and-20 attempt from the Marshall 20-yard line.

Marshall took over at their own 20-yard line with 5:09 to play and used eight-straight rushing plays—the majority by Ali and Laborn—to run out the clock.

Junior linebacker Eli Neal paced the Thundering Herd defensive unit with 10 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss in the victory.

With the win, Marshall finishes the year 9-4, the Thundering Herd’s best record since 2018.
