NEW ORLEANS — Marshall owned an early 14-0 lead in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl, but was held scoreless in the second half in a 35-17 defeat at the hands of UTSA.
The Thundering Herd, who were one of an FBS-leading 12 Sun Belt football programs to participate in Bowl Season, fell to 13-6 in 19 all-time bowl appearances.
Marshall’s defense held UTSA scoreless on its first five drives of the contest—with two of those drives ending on interceptions by senior linebacker Eli Neal and redshirt senior defensive back Micah Abraham. Neal’s interception led to the first Thundering Herd score—a 1-yard rushing touchdown by junior running back Ethan Payne just two plays later.
The second Marshall touchdown came on a Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl record 64-yard rush by junior running back Rasheen Ali on the first play of the second quarter. UTSA responded in the frame, scoring touchdowns on three-straight second quarter possessions to erase the early deficit. The Thundering Herd also added a 44-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Rece Verhoff to make it 21-17 at the break.
The second half was all Roadrunners, as the UTSA defense held the Thundering Herd scoreless and the UTSA offense tacked on a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters to produce the final 35-17 margin.
Redshirt junior wide receiver Jayden Harrison amassed 168 all-purpose yards for the Thundering Herd—with 132 yards on six receptions on offense and 36 kickoff return yards. Ali rushed for 92 yards on nine carries, with all of his damage coming in the first half of play. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Stephen Dix Jr. paced the defensive unit with nine tackles, a tackle for loss and a sack, while Neal added eight tackles and tackle for loss to his aforementioned interception.
With the loss, Marshall falls to 6-7 on the year.
