NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference welcomes a pair of new head coaches heading into the 2023 season.
Tim Beck, Coastal Carolina
Tim Beck was named the fourth head coach in the 20-year history of Coastal Carolina football on Dec. 4, 2022. Beck was most recently the offensive coordinator for NC State from 2020-22.
A first-time head coach, Beck brings 35 years of coaching experience—with 12 as offensive coordinator at Nebraska (2011-14), Ohio State (2015-16), Texas (2017-19) and NC State (2020-22)—to the Chanticleers. He has helped guide teams to 17 postseason bowl games all-time, including every year since 2007.
Beck is a three-time nominee for the Broyles Award, given annually to the nation’s top assistant coach in the FBS. Before his successful string of offensive coordinator roles, Beck was an assistant at Nebraska (2008-10), Kansas (2005-07), Missouri State (1996-98), Kansas State (1991-92) and Illinois State (1990).
He played one year of college football at UCF (1985).
G.J. Kinne, Texas State
G.J. Kinne was named Texas State’s 21st head football coach on Dec. 2, 2022. Kinne takes over the Bobcat program after constructing a conference champion, Top 10-ranked team and FCS playoff participant in one season at the helm at UIW.
Kinne’s UIW squad went 12-2 in 2022, winning the Southland Conference title and advancing to the semifinals of the FCS playoffs. In his first season as a head coach, Kinne was named a finalist for the 2022 Eddie Robinson Award, given annually to the national coach of the year.
Prior to taking the head job at UIW, Kinne had been the offensive coordinator at Hawaii (2020) and UCF (2021) and posted coaching stops with the Philadelphia Eagles (2019), Arkansas (2018) and SMU (2017).
As a player, Kinne spent a year at Texas (2007), before becoming a three-year starting quarterback for Tulsa (2009-11). He finished his playing career with 9,472 passing yards and 81 touchdown passes, earning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2010.
The pair joins a group of head coaches that includes Shawn Clark at App State, Butch Jones at Arkansas State, Clay Helton at Georgia Southern, Shawn Elliott at Georgia State, Curt Cignetti at James Madison, Michael Desormeaux at Louisiana, Terry Bowden at ULM, Charles Huff at Marshall, Ricky Rahne at Old Dominion, Kane Wommack at South Alabama, Will Hall at Southern Miss and Jon Sumrall at Troy.
