Southern Miss Guard Andre Curbelo Earns Sun Belt Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS – After producing a triple-double and leading Southern Miss to a pair of home wins in league play, senior guard Andre Curbelo has been named Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

A Vega Baja, Puerto Rico native, Curbelo averaged 14 points, 10 assists and 6.5 rebounds across two games, including the first triple-double by a Southern Miss player since 1980 with 13 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high 11 assists in a 79-73 win against Georgia State on Jan. 4. Two days later, he tallied 15 points and nine assists in the Golden Eagles’ 81-71 upset victory over 19th-ranked James Madison.

Curbelo’s triple-double was the first by a Sun Belt Conference player since Feb. 2022. It was also just the sixth occurrence in a league game in the past 10 seasons and the ninth since the 1998-99 campaign.

Curbelo becomes the third Southern Miss player to garner the Sun Belt’s top weekly honor since joining the conference prior to last season. Teammate Austin Crowley and DeAndre Pinckney received the honor in consecutive weeks for the Golden Eagles in Jan. 2023.
