NEW ORLEANS – Following conference-opening victories, Marshall’s Braylon Braxton, Louisiana’s Cameron Whitfield and Arkansas State’s Clune Van Del secured the Sun Belt football weekly awards.
Football Offensive Player of the Week
Braylon Braxton, Marshall
(RS Jr., QB – Frisco, Texas)
Thundering Herd redshirt junior quarterback Braylon Braxton accounted for five touchdowns in his first start in a Marshall uniform, leading the team to a 52-37 victory over App State. The Frisco, Texas, native completed 8-of-14 passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns and also led the Thundering Herd with 140 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Braxton helped Marshall tally 21 first downs on only 53 offensive plays, while connecting on 8 of his final 11 throws with three of those passes going for scores.
Football Defensive Player of the Week
Cameron Whitfield, Louisiana
(RS Jr., LB – Houston, Texas)
Ragin’ Cajuns redshirt junior linebacker Cameron Whitfield tied a single-game program record with four sacks in Louisiana’s 23-13 victory over Southern Miss, which snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Golden Eagles dating back to 1994. The Houston, Texas, product also added six tackles, four tackles for loss and a pair of forced fumbles—both coming on sacks on Southern Miss’ final two drives of the game. Whitfield’s second forced fumble was recovered by Louisiana to seal the victory with 1:03 to play.
Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Clune Van Andel, Arkansas State
(So., K – Grand Rapids, Mich.)
Red Wolves sophomore kicker Clune Van Andel kicked a 34-yard game-winner with 10 seconds remaining to lift Arkansas State to an 18-16 win over South Alabama. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native tallied 13 points—the most by an Arkansas State kicker since Blake Grupe had 14 against Memphis in 2021. Van Andel went 4-for-4 on field goal attempts with kicks of 20, 21 and 25 yards ahead of the 34-yard game-winner. Van Andel is the first Red Wolves kicker to post a 4-for-4 game since Dominic Zvada at Ohio State in 2022.
