NEW ORLEANS – Following contributions to autonomy conference and conference-opening wins, James Madison’s Alonza Barnett III, South Alabama’s Jordan Scruggs and James Madison’s Terrence Spence reaped the Sun Belt football weekly honors.
Football Offensive Player of the Week
Alonza Barnett III, James Madison
(RS So., QB – Whitsett, N.C.)
Dukes redshirt sophomore quarterback Alonza Barnett III accounted for a single-game program record seven touchdowns, leading James Madison to a 70-50 victory over North Carolina. The Whitsett, N.C., native completed 22-of-34 passes for 388 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 99 yards and two scores. The Dukes tallied a single-half program record with 53 points in the first half and a program-best 70 points against an FBS foe. Barnett’s 487 total yards ranked third in James Madison single-game program history.
Football Defensive Player of the Week
Jordan Scruggs, South Alabama
(RS Jr., DB – Kansas City, Mo.)
Jaguars redshirt junior defensive back Jordan Scruggs stepped in front of an App State pass in the end zone and returned it 96 yards to set up a South Alabama touchdown in a 48-14 conference-opening victory. The Kansas City, Mo., native’s first career interception and return proved to be the longest in South Alabama program history. Scruggs efforts, which also included four tackles, helped the Jaguars hold the top passing offense in the Sun Belt to just two touchdowns in the conference opener.
Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Terrence Spence, James Madison
(Sr., DB – Ringwood, N.J.)
Dukes senior defensive back Terrence Spence got in untouched and blocked a punt, which resulted in a Jayden Mines scoop and score for James Madison’s first touchdown in a 70-50 victory over North Carolina. The block was Spence’s first in a James Madison uniform and the seventh of his collegiate career. The Ringwood, N.J., product also added four tackles and a pair of interceptions on defense, including a 33-yard pick six that capped the Dukes program record-setting 53-point first half.
