Arkansas State Claims Inaugural Xbox Bowl Championship

NEW ORLEANS – Appearing in Bowl Season for the third-straight year, Arkansas State won the inaugural Xbox Bowl championship, 34-28, over Missouri State in Frisco, Texas.

The Red Wolves—who were part of the Sun Belt’s 10-team bowl contingent that leads all non-autonomy conferences for the fourth-straight season—secured consecutive bowl victories for the second time in program history (2012 & 2013) and improved to 6-7 in 13 FBS bowl appearances.

Arkansas State scored on each of it first four possessions to open up a 24-7 halftime advantage it would never relinquish.

Redshirt senior wide receiver Corey Rucker—already the Arkansas State and Sun Belt career leader in receiving yards—became the Red Wolves career receiving touchdowns leader with a 71-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. His 27th career touchdown catch also moved Rucker into second place in Sun Belt annals, trailing only Troy’s Eric Thomas (29). Rucker amassed 166 receiving yards on six receptions to go over 4,000 receiving yards for his career.

Junior quarterback Jaylen Raynor completed 17-of-31 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns. Redshirt sophomore wideout Chauncy Cobb and junior wide receiver Jaylen Bonelli hauled in their first career touchdown receptions in a Red Wolves uniform.

The Arkansas State defense registered 14 tackles for loss and eight sacks with three players—redshirt senior defensive lineman Demarcus Hendricks (2 TFLs, 2 Sacks), redshirt junior defensive lineman Cody Sigler (2.5 TFLs, 1.5 Sacks) and redshirt senior defensive lineman Ethan Hassler (2.5 TFLs, 1.5 Sacks)—accumulating two-or-more tackles for loss and 1.5-or-more sacks. Redshirt senior linebacker Kyle Taylor carded his fifth double-digit tackle effort of the season with 10 tackles to pace the unit.

With the win, Arkansas State finishes the season 7-6, securing its first back-to-back winning campaigns since a string of nine-straight from 2011-19.
