HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Coastal Carolina junior Setter Jalyn Stout recorded her 40th career triple-double on Friday, September 26, as the Chanticleers opened Sun Belt Conference play on the road.
A postgame stat correction gave Stout the NCAA record with her 40th career triple-double on 11 kills, 11 assists, and 11 digs in the Chanticleers' road win over Marshall. Jordyn Gates, who played one season at Arkansas and three at Division II Grand Valley State, previously held the record of 39 across all NCAA divisions.
“It’s so easy to say that Jalyn is just a special athlete with a fast arm, but there is so much more that she is adding to her game that is helping her be successful,” head coach Steve Loeswick stated. “Her competitiveness, her fight, and her fearlessness shine through when you watch her play, but now she is adding maturity to her game and becoming an even better leader for her teammates.”
Loeswick recognized the talent level in Stout immediately. He explained, “We certainly ask a lot of Jalyn on the court in so many areas, and she loves that role. She fills up the stat sheet in many areas, but if you ask her, she is not playing for the triple-doubles. She is playing to help her teammates be the best they can be and with our team ending on the right side of the score. She is a coach’s daughter, so I think part of that competitiveness comes from growing up in the gym and being around her mom.”
Stout, the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year and 2023 Freshman of the Year, entered the season already owning the NCAA Division I record with 34 triple-doubles, four more than the previous mark. Stout broke Eastern Illinois' Taylor Smith's Division I career record of 30 against South Alabama on Nov. 15, 2024 (14 kills, 29 assists, 17 digs).
When asked about her success, Stout stated, “Honestly, it's something I try not to think about often, because I'm scared that it will become something I focus on in an unhealthy way. I also don't think any reward or achievement I have gotten could ever be possible without my team or my coaches. They all push me to be my best, and I'm forever thankful for that.”
As a freshman, she posted an NCAA record 14 triple-doubles, then reset it as a sophomore, tallying 20. She led Coastal Carolina to the NCAA Tournament after winning the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament.
As the sport continues to evolve, Stout’s personal growth has done much of the same.
“Volleyball has changed in many ways since I started, but the biggest factor to my growth has been my team, Stout said. “We all work hard, and we all work towards the same goal. There's not much more that you can ask for.
“To me, there's no such thing as one successful person. Honestly, you need at least six players to win a game, so I think my success is purely from my team and our staff. Everybody works hard on and off the court, so I'm lucky to be able to call them my team.”
Loeswick has witnessed Stout’s growth first-hand and has developed goals for her.
“While she is here at Coastal, I will continue to challenge her to be her best self,” Loeswick said. “I am proud of the strides she has taken with her academic journey and watching her become an amazing young person. So much growth happens during a person’s college years. On the court, I believe that she could be one of the best setters in the country, and down the road, could have an impact with our national team program. She will certainly have the opportunity to play professionally if she chooses.
“There is no end goal with Jalyn. My hope is that we will have a relationship that continues way past graduation, and she knows she will be loved and supported by the Loeswicks.”
