NEW ORLEANS – Troy junior forward Victor Valdes has been named Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Trojans to a 2-0 week at home in league play.
Valdes averaged 18.0 points, 8.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals while shooting 12-for-22 (.545) from the field and 9-for-11 (.818) at the free throw line to complement three 3-pointers across the two victories.
A Monterrey, Mexico native, Valdes got his week started with 19 points and shot 6-for-11 overall, made a pair of 3-pointers and handed out three assists with two steals in Troy’s 91-65 victory Southern Miss on Nov. 14.
Valdes registered his first double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 14 assists to complement six rebounds, three assists and a trio of blocks in the Trojans’ 99-74 win over Arkansas State on Nov. 17. Valdes recorded just the second double-double comprised of points and assists in the Sun Belt this season, as his 14 helpers were the most by a player in the conference this season.
Valdes is the second Troy player to earn the Sun Belt’s top weekly honor this season after sophomore guard Cooper Campbell was recognized Nov. 11 following the first week of the season.
