NEW ORLEANS – Southern Miss graduate forward Djahi Binet has been named Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after averaging a double-double across two contests for the Golden Eagles.
Binet averaged 24 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 16-for-23 (.696) from the field, making each of his two 3-point attempts and converting 100 percent of his 14 free throw attempts in games against Marshall and Kent State.
A native of Nice, France, Binet scored a season-high 31 points and grabbed 15 rebounds at Marshall on Feb. 4 to become the first Sun Belt player this season to achieve those benchmarks in the same game. He shot 9-for-11 from the field and went 12-for-12 at the foul stripe while chipping in two assists, two blocks and a pair of steals while committing zero turnovers. Seven of his rebounds came on the offensive glass.
Binet closed out the week with 17 points and seven rebounds while shooting 7-for-12 from the floor in the Golden Eagles’ thrilling 66-65 home win over Kent State on Feb. 7 in the MAC-SBC Challenge.
Binet is the second Southern Miss player to earn the Sun Belt’s top weekly honor this season after teammate and junior forward Tylik Weeks was recognized on Nov. 25.
