Softball Tiebreakers

SUN BELT CONFERENCE SOFTBALL TIEBREAKING PROCEDURES

The Sun Belt Conference Softball Champion shall be the team that finishes with the best won-loss percentage in all conference games during the regular season. In the case that two or more teams finish with identical won-loss records, they shall be declared co-champions.

Seeding for the Softball Championship shall be determined based on each teams’ overall conference winning percentage, regardless of division. The team with the highest overall conference winning percentage shall receive the #1 seed and continue down until the top 10 teams have been seeded for the championship. In the event of a tie for a particular seed, the tie breaking procedure below shall be used to break the tie:

Two Teams
A. If one team has defeated the other team a greater number of times, that team shall be awarded the higher-seeded position.

B. If the tied teams split games or did not play each other, the higher position will be awarded to the team that has the best won-loss record against the common opponent occupying the highest-seed not involved in the tie.

C. If each team has the same record against, or one team did not play the highest seeded team not involved in the tie, then the won-loss records against the next highest seeded common opponent not involved in the tie would be considered and so on down the line until the tie is broken.

D. If still tied, the higher position will be awarded to the team that has the highest run differential in all games against the common opponent occupying the highest seed not involved in the tie. A run differential of +/- 8 runs is the maximum allowed per game.

E. If each team has the same run differential, or one team did not play the highest seeded team not involved in the tie, then the highest run differential in all games against the next highest seeded common opponent not involved in the tie would be considered and so on down the line until the tie is broken. A run differential of +/- 8 runs is the maximum allowed per game.

F. If still tied, the higher position will be awarded to the team that has the most runs scored in all games against the common opponent occupying the highest seed not involved in the tie. A total of +/- 8 runs is the maximum allowed per game.

G. If each team has the same runs scored, or one team did not play the highest seeded team not involved in the tie, then the most runs scored in all games against the next highest seeded common opponent not involved in the tie would be considered and so on down the line until the tie is broken. A total of +/- 8 runs is the maximum allowed per game.

H. If the records are the same against all teams, then the seeded position would be determined by a toss of the coin by the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner.

Three or More Teams
A. In the event of a three-way tie, if all teams have played each other, the won-loss record of the tied teams against each other is first considered.

B. If the teams are still tied, the team’s records against the common opponent occupying the next highest-seed after the three-way tie is considered and so forth until the tie is broken.

C. If still tied, the higher position will be awarded to the team that has the highest run differential in all games against the common opponent occupying the highest seed not involved in the tie. A run differential of +/- 8 runs is the maximum allowed per game.

E. If still tied, the higher position will be awarded to the team that has the most runs scored in all games against the common opponent occupying the highest seed not involved in the tie. A total of +/- 8 runs is the maximum allowed per game.

G. If there is still a tie, the seeded position of the teams will be determined by a draw conducted by the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner.

H. For all ties of three or more teams, the progression of the tiebreaker shall be followed until the highest seed amongst the tied is determined. If one team falls out of contention for the higher seed, the remaining teams will continue down the tiebreaker until a higher seed is determined. Once the highest seed is determined, said team is removed from the pool of tied team and the tie of the remaining tied teams is broken by starting over from the beginning of the applicable tie-breaker.
