Coastal Carolina, Hartwick notch weekend men's soccer wins

Coastal Scores Three Goals in Final 12 Minutes to Top ODU, 3-2

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team found itself in a 2-0 hole with little more than 12 minutes remaining in regulation, but stormed back with a trio of goals to overtake the lead and down visiting Old Dominion, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

The Chanticleers' (4-4-1) comeback was led by the two goals of junior forward Frantzdy Pierrot, who netted the tying marker in the 83rd minute and completed the rally with the game winner in the 86th minute. Pierrot's pair of goals brings his season total to three.

Martin Melchor started the Coastal comeback with a free kick from 25 yards out that found the top right corner of the net in the game's 78th minute. Melchor's tally came just 25 seconds after ODU (3-4-2) had taken a two-goal advantage in the 77th minute, and pushes the junior midfielder's season total to four, tops on the team.

Braulio Linares-Ortiz recorded his fourth win of the season in goal for the Chants, stopping six of ODU's eight chances. Coastal also finished with eight shots on goal for the match, and held a 20-12 advantage in overall shots.

ODU broke the scoreless tie early in the contest as Jesse Miralrio scored an unassisted goal, slotting an shot from 10 yards past Linares-Ortiz into the lower corner of the net.

The remainder of first half went scoreless with ODU keeper Alex Tiesenhasuen keeping Coastal off the board despite Chanticleer advantages in shots (11-6) and corners (8-0).

ODU's second marker in the game's 77th minute was also unassisted, this time coming off the foot of Doni Pollock. Pollock slipped past the final Chanticleer defender and buried his one-on-one opportunity against Linares-Ortiz, who had come out to try to stop the breakaway.

After Melchor's free kick put Coastal on the board for the first time, the Chant duo of Pierrot and Wes White went to work as the latter recorded assists on both of the final two goals.

On the tying goal, White received a cross into the box and sent a quick flick to Pierrot across the face of goal. Pierrot found himself with an open net and casually back-heeled the ball over the line. The game-winner saw White hit an open Pierrot who hammered his shot past Tiesenhasuen to seal the win.

The Chants remain at home for their next match, a 6 p.m. meeting against 5th-ranked Clemson on Tuesday at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

Marcus Nordgard (Copenhagen, Denmark/Oeregaard Gymnasium), Mike Rood (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley), and Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) scored goals within a 21:18 span as the Hawks cruised to their fourth straight victory.

Less than six minutes after the Hawks’ second goal, they added to their total. Berry fought through a Bulldog defender, got into the box, and made no mistake for his second goal of the campaign.

The Hawks would hold a decisive advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, 11-4. With the game in hand, the Bulldogs would apply pressure in the second half, but the Hawks would keep them at bay to secure the clean sheet.

Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) and Matt Morrish (Brighton, England/St. Bede’s School) split time in the Hartwick goal. Wilson played the first half and made one save. Morrish stopped three shots in the second half. Stewart stopped eight shots for Bryant.
