Georgia State's Grey, Troy's Cano Earn Final Golfer of the Month Honors

NEW ORLEANS - For Troy's Fátima Fernández Cano the month of March and the beginning of April has been quite fortunate for the junior from Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Cano, the reigning Women's Golfer of the Month, earned back-to-back Golfer of the Month honors as she claimed the award for April as well.

Cano played in four tournaments since March, winning three of them to close out Troy's regular season. Cano currently ranks 67th nationally by Golfstat and is 20th in the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings. She posted a 71.50 stroke average over the 12 rounds since the previous Sun Belt Golfer of the Month award with five of those rounds under par and nine of the 12 rounds at 73 or lower.

Cano knocked off the nation’s No. 4 ranked player in her victory at the Henssler Intercollegiate and helped the Trojans to team victories at the Samford Intercollegiate and the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate. She is third nationally with a 4.01 average on par 4 holes, while ranking seventh with a -0.17 score versus par and a 71.74 stroke average. Cano set a pair of Troy records at the Samford Intercollegiate with her 136 36-hole score and her 208 54-hole total.

Georgia State's J.J. Grey led the Panthers with a 71.08 scoring average during the month of March. In total, Grey competed in 12 rounds, shooting par or better in nine of those rounds, including a stretch of seven straight under par.

Grey opened the month with a tie for 18th at the Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner. The senior shot 77-72-71 (+4) to lead the Panthers to a fifth place finish at the event hosted by Auburn.

He followed with a tie for third at the prestigious Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern that included eight teams ranked in the top 50 by GolfStat. Grey shot 69-65-70, leading the Panthers to an opening round 274 which was the second-lowest round in relation to par in program history. Grey continued his solid play with a third place finish at the Furman Intercollegiate, leading the Panthers to their third-straight title at the event. Grey shot 69-71-68 to finish 8-under par. He guided GSU to a second-round 275, the second-lowest round of the year and fourth lowest round in program history.

For the season, Grey has nine top 25 finishes in 10 events, including five top 10s (four third place finishes) and leads the team with a 71.53 scoring average. In the most up-to-date GolfStat ranking, he is No. 94 in the country.

The 2016 Sun Belt Women's Golf Championship is set for April 17-19 at the Raven course at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort. Nine teams will compete for the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.

The 2016 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship is set for April 24-27, also at the Raven course. Eleven men's teams will compete for the league's automatic bid. Both the women's and men's championships will be streamed live for free via the Sun Belt Conference.
