ATLANTA – Fifth-seeded UTA made quick work of eighth-seeded Troy with a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-17, 25-23) to close out the first day’s matches at the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Championship.
The Mavericks move on to take on No. 4 seed Little Rock on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET at the GSU Sports Arena.
Freshman outside hitter Brooke Townsend led UTA with 12 kills. Junior middle blocker/outside hitter Madison Hill finished with 11 kills, three digs and a match-high four blocks, while redshirt senior middle blocker Zhanelle Geathers registered 10 kills and a pair of blocks. Senior setter Alex Janak recorded 19 assists, three service aces and a dig, while junior libero Madelyn St. Germain tallied 13 digs on the night.
The Mavericks went on runs throughout the match to swing the momentum away from Troy. The Trojans led the first set 17-12 before UTA went on a 5-0 run to tie the set at 17-17 and battled over the closing rallies to take the 1-0 lead. In the second set, the Mavs closed with eight-straight points, fueled by three kills by Townsend, two kills by Hill and a service ace from St. Germain. The third set saw UTA take a 7-0 lead before Troy fought back to get to down one at 23-22. The team traded points to close the set with Hill’s 11th kill sealing the victory.
