ATLANTA – Sixth-seeded Arkansas State fought back from a two-set deficit to grab a 3-2 victory (20-25, 22-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-10) over seventh-seeded South Alabama in the opening match of the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Championship.
The Red Wolves move on to take on No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina on Friday at 5:00 p.m. ET at the GSU Sports Arena.
Senior outside hitter Carlisa May, the three-time Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year, led Arkansas State with 19 kills while freshman outside hitter Macey Putt added 18. Senior setter Ellie Watkins handed out a game-high 54 assists while sophomore defensive specialist/libero Tatum Ticknor paced the A-State defense with 54 digs.
South Alabama took command of the match early before Arkansas State stormed back in the third and fourth sets to knot the match at 2-2. In the final set, the Jaguars took an early 6-3 advantage to force an Arkansas State timeout. The Red Wolves rallied with a 4-0 scoring run to take a 7-6 lead. A-State kept its momentum going on a 3-0 run, thanks to two service aces by freshman defensive specialist/libero Callie Weaver and a kill by sophomore outside hitter Peyton Uhlenhake to pull ahead 10-8. The Red Wolves maintained their advantage down the stretch to take the set 15-10 and secure the victory.
