ATLANTA – Top-seeded Texas State completed its title sweep with a 3-0 sweep (27-25, 25-12, 25-18) of second-seeded Appalachian State to capture the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Championship.
The regular-season champion earned its second Sun Belt Tournament title (2013, 2018) in its fourth championship match appearance (2013, 2014, 2017, 2018).
Texas State was led by senior middle blocker Madison Daigle with 12 kills, two digs and three blocks. Daigle totaled 27 kills for the tournament, earning recognition as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Junior outside hitter Cheyenne Huskey added nine kills and six digs, freshman setter Emily DeWalt posted 28 assists and sophomore setter Brooke Johnson contributed two service aces and 11 digs.
Appalachian State was led by senior setter Becky Porter with 29 assists and 12 digs for her 11th double-double of the season.
The Mountaineers opened up the first set on a 4-0 run and extended their advantage to 11-4 to take control early. Texas State rallied late in the set with seven points in a row to take a 23-21 lead. Then came a furious scoring back and forth that resulted in the Bobcats prevailing 27-25 on a kill by freshman middle blocker Jillian Slaughter.
The see-saw battle carried over to the second set until Texas State went on a four-point run to take an 8-5 lead. The momentum continued to favor the Bobcats as their lead extended to 20-10. Three-straight kills from Daigle capped a four-point run to close the set and give the top seed a two-set advantage.
Texas State went on another seven-point run in the third set to firmly move into the driver’s seat. Down the stretch, the two teams traded three-point runs with Texas State holding a 22-17 advantage. The Bobcats took three of the last four points to finish off the set and the sweep.
Texas State now awaits its postseason destination and opponent, which will be unveiled Sunday, Nov. 25 at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU during the 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship Selection Show.
