• Sun Belt men’s soccer has a busy week ahead with eight matches on the Week 2 slate. Georgia State at No. 9 Louisville on Tuesday, Aug. 28 is scheduled for live coverage on ACC Network Extra.
• After being ranked 18th in the preseason poll, Coastal Carolina moved Coastal Carolina is listed among the teams receiving votes in this week’s
United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I National Poll. Coastal Carolina (fourth), Georgia Southern (fifth) and Appalachian State (eighth) were ranked in this week’s Southeast Region poll.
• The Sun Belt got off to a strong start, going 5-2-1 over the opening weekend. Coastal Carolina picked up the league’s first ranked win of the fall with a 2-1 double-overtime win over then-No. 13 Georgetown. Chanticleer junior forward Tsiki Ntsabeleng knocked in the match-winner in the 113th minute.
• Four of the five Sun Belt teams posted wins over the first weekend, highlighted by Appalachian State going 2-0 in its Florida swing at Jacksonville and North Florida and Georgia Southern going 1-0-1 with a win at VCU and a draw at Old Dominion. Eagles senior forward Javier Carbonell scored twice in a three-and-a-half-minute span late in the second half to help earn the 2-2 draw at Old Dominion.
• Howard’s win against Bryant was its first-season opening victory since 2011. The Bison got goals from senior forward Victor Guirma and junior midfielder Andres Gomez in the 2-1 victory.
• Georgia State junior defender Kyle Clinton is
one of 31 student-athletes on the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy Men's Watch List.
• The 2018 Sun Belt Men’s Soccer Championship is set for Nov. 7-11 at Eagle Field/Erk Park in Statesboro, Ga., hosted by Georgia Southern.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Camden Holbrook, Appalachian State (Fr., F, Cary, N.C.)
Appalachian State freshman forward Camden Holbrook had himself a weekend where he helped the Mountaineers start 2-0 for the first time since 2012 and win back-to-back road games for the first time since 2015. Holbrook played in his first-ever match at Jacksonville and became the first Mountaineer since 2009 to net a hat trick, including the game-winning goal in overtime against the Dolphins. Two days later at North Florida, his goal in the second half gave App a 1-0 lead and then assisted on the second goal. He leads the Sun Belt in multiple categories after the first weekend – goals (4), points (10) and game-winning goals (2). In addition to being named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week, Holbrook was named
National Men's Player of the Week by the United Soccer Coaches for his performance.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jake Chasteen, Appalachian State (Sr., GK, Watauga, N.C.)
Appalachian State senior goalkeeper Jake Chasteen helped the Mountaineers start 2-0 with six saves and a 0.95 goals against average. Chasteen stopped three shots in each contest while posting his first clean sheet of the season and the 10th of his career in the 2-0 shutout at North Florida. He is second in the Sun Belt in GAA and third in save percentage (.750).
