• Sun Belt men’s soccer closes out the month of September with six matches on the schedule this week.
• The week’s three road contests are slated for live coverage on ESPN+ – Appalachian State at High Point (Tuesday, Sept. 25) and Appalachian State at George Mason and Georgia Southern at Mercer (Saturday, Sept. 29).
• In the latest
NCAA RPI updated through games of Sept. 23, Coastal Carolina is ranked 10th to lead the way for the Sun Belt.
• The Chanticleers enter the week ranked 18th in the
United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I National Poll, 12th by
TopDrawerSoccer.com and 15th by
College Soccer News. In this week’s United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region poll, Coastal Carolina moves up to second, Georgia State enters the poll in ninth and Georgia Southern rounds out the rankings in 10th.
• Georgia Southern senior midfielder/forward Javier Carbonell ranks tied for second in the nation in goals per game (1.29), total goals (9) and points per game (2.86) and tied for 13th in shots per game (4.00). Among other NCAA Division I statistical leaders, three Sun Belt goalkeepers are tied for 29th in shutouts with three each – Appalachian State junior Jake Chasteen, Coastal Carolina senior Chris Dattalo and Georgia State junior Paul Tyson. Tyson tops the conference and ranks 21st nationally in goals against average (.623).
• Howard senior forward Victor Guirma scored his fourth goal and assisted on his first in the Bison’s 2-2 tie at UMBC on Sept. 19. Guirma is third in points (7) and tied for third in goals (4) in the Sun Belt.
• Georgia State junior defender Kyle Clinton is
one of 31 student-athletes on the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy Men's Watch List.
• The 2018 Sun Belt Men’s Soccer Championship is set for Nov. 7-11 at Eagle Field/Erk Park in Statesboro, Ga., hosted by Georgia Southern.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Reed Hunnicutt, Appalachian State (So., F, Charlotte, N.C.)
Appalachian State sophomore forward Reed Hunnicutt scored his first goal of the season, a goal that became the game winner in the Mountaineers’ 1-0 win over UNC Greensboro. The victory kept Appalachian State undefeated at home and moved the Mountaineers to their best seven-match start since 2007 (5-0-2).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alex Summerfield, Georgia State (Jr., D, Billingshurst, England)
Georgia State junior defender Alex Summerfield scored the game-winning goal in the 20th minute of the Panthers’ 1-0 victory over in-state foe Mercer. The victory over Mercer extended Georgia State’s winning streak to six games, a feat the program accomplished for the first time in over 30 years. He became the first Panther to score goals in back-to-back matches since Hannes Burmeister in 2017 and helped the defense pitch two straight shutouts. For his efforts, Summerfield was also named to
College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week.
