RALEIGH, N.C. – Coastal Carolina pulled off another upset in the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship as redshirt junior midfielder Tyrone Mondi knocked home the golden goal in the 104th minute of the second overtime to give the Chanticleers a 3-2 victory over North Carolina State.
Coastal Carolina moves on to face No. 8 seed SMU on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. CT in Dallas.
Mondi stole the show, literally, stealing the ball from a Wolfpack player and going on the attack to score the game-winner with just over six minutes remaining before the match would have went into penalty kicks. He also assisted on Coastal Carolina's goal that made the score 2-1 in the 64th minute. Freshman defender Kasper Skraep headed in his second goal of the season on Mondi's free kick.
The Chanticleers' first goal, which tied the match at 1-1, was also from a freshman. Midfielder Emile Rzepecki blasted home a shot from 22 yards out on a direct kick in the 37th minute.
Coastal Carolina's win marked the Sun Belt Conference's fourth NCAA Tournament win in eight all-time appearances. The Chanticleers are responsible for all four victories – Radford in 2016, Mercer and Clemson in 2017 and North Carolina State this season. The Chanticleers' 2017 NCAA Tournament run ended in the third round to eventual national champion and ninth-seeded Stanford.
