Coastal Carolina Falls to SMU in NCAA Men’s Soccer Second Round

DALLAS – Coastal Carolina went into double-overtime for the third consecutive match, but this one came out different as Southern Methodist scored with three minutes left in the second overtime to defeat the Chanticleers 1-0 in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship.

Garrett McLaughlin scored the lone goal of the match after a shot from Knut Ahlander was saved by Coastal goalkeeper Alberto Ciroi, whose save landed at the feet of McLauglin who kicked in the rebound for the lone score of the match. The goal came in the 107th minute.

The Chants had plenty of chances to win the match as five of their 14 shots were on goal, but saved by SMU goalie Grant Makela.

Coastal Carolina had eight shots in the first half compared to seven for SMU, but in the second half and the overtime periods the Mustangs turned up the heat and outshot the Chants 19-6 to finish the game with 26 shots compared to 14 for Coastal Carolina.

Ciroi, playing in his final game as a Chanticleer, finished the game with five saves. Tyrone Mondi and Sam Snaith had three shots each for the Chants while Paavo Riihjarvi and Emile Rzepecki finished with two shots a piece.

Coastal Carolina finishes the season as the Sun Belt Tournament Champions and with a 10-8-3 record.

SMU moves to 17-1-1 on the season and will host fellow American Athletic Conference member Central Florida in the round of 32.
