Texas State Wins Sun Belt Volleyball Championship

SAN MARCOS, Texas – In front of a tournament-record crowd of 3,040, No. 1 Texas State took home the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Championship with a 3-1 (26-24, 19-25, 25-21, 25-18) victory over No. 2 Coastal Carolina.
 
The Bobcats' win marked their third conference tournament title (2014, 2018, 2019) and the fourth time in conference history a team captured back-to-back regular-season and tournament titles.
 
Texas State now awaits its postseason fate with the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship Selection Show set for Sunday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU. The Bobcats will be making their third NCAA Tournament appearance as a member of the Sun Belt and 11th in school history.
 
Match 7 - No. 1 Texas State 3, No. 2 Coastal Carolina 1
The electricity in Strahan Arena definitely translated to the court as the Sun Belt's top two teams battled to take home the tournament trophy.
 
Senior outside hitter Cheyenne Huskey filled up the box score for the Bobcats and earned Most Outstanding Player honors, leading the way with 17 kills, eight digs, four blocks, three service aces and one assist. In two tournament matches, Huskey finished second in kills per set at 4.29.
 
Sophomore setter Emily DeWalt also received All-Tournament team honors after a championship match performance of 41 assists, five digs and two services aces. DeWalt averaged 10.29 assists over seven sets in the tournament.
 
Texas State took control in the first set with a 24-17 lead before Coastal Carolina reeled off seven-straight points to even things up. The Bobcats got the next two points to take the early lead.
 
After the Chanticleers took the second set, Texas State used two 4-0 runs in the third set to grab an 18-15 lead. The two teams exchanged blows in the latter part of the set with the Bobcats prevailing 25-21.
 
The fourth set was highly contested as well until Texas State went on another 4-0 run to take a 16-11 lead. Coastal Carolina pulled within three points at 20-17 before Texas State came up with a final surge and scored five of the last six points to secure the victory.
