UTA's Tran, Coastal Carolina's Taylor Earn Sun Belt Weekly Golf Honors

MEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK

Zack Taylor, Coastal Carolina (Senior, Pittsburgh, Pa.)
Coastal Carolina men's golfer Zack Taylor was tabbed the Sun Belt Men's Golfer of the Week. Taylor posted rounds of 66, 68, and 74 to win the 19th annual General Hackler Championship on March 9-10 by two strokes with his 54-hole score of 208, -8 under par. With his win at the Hackler, he joins former Chant Andrew Dorn as the only Coastal golfers to finish first in the annual home tournament. Dorn finished as the co-champion in 2014. The senior carded a third-round 74, +2, but his four-stroke lead entering the final round of play proved to be enough as the Chanticleer golfer held on for the win at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The second-year Chant carded a tournament-low round 66, -6 under par, over the first round of play and then followed that up with a second-round 68, -4 under par, to end day one in first-place overall with a 36-hole score of 134, -10 under par. The round of 66 was tied for the second-lowest 18-hole score in his career as a Chant, while his two-round score of 134 was tied for the fourth-lowest 36-hole score in a 54-hole event in Coastal men's golf history. For the tournament, he had a tournament-high two eagles, to go along with 33 pars and a team-leading 12 birdies.

WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK

Kate Tran, UTA (Junior, Arlington, Texas)
Kate Tran has become the first player in the history of the UT Arlington women's golf program to be named Sun Belt Conference Golfer of the Week. The award covers the time period from Feb. 27-Mar. 10 in which the Mavericks competed in one event – the Kiawah Island Classic Mar. 1-3. Teeing it up against the largest field in collegiate golf, Tran tied for 3rd place out of an incredible 264 competitors at -4 following rounds of 71-70-71: 212. Entering the tournament, Tran had four under-par rounds in 84 career rounds; the junior had three such rounds in three opportunities at the Kiawah Island Classic. Tran tied for the tournament lead in par-5 scoring at -6 and tied for the 5th-best par-4 scoring average in the field at -1. The Arlington Martin High product was the lone player in the field to convert two eagles as she rolled in one each of the first two rounds. The UTA women's golf program played its initial season in 2017-18, and as previously mentioned this is the Mavericks' first-ever weekly Sun Belt honor.
