Tolbert, Mobley and Grupe Earn Week 1 Football Honors

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jalen Tolbert, South Alabama
With career-best totals of 169 yards on six catches in the Jaguars’ season-opening victory at Southern Mississippi, Tolbert became the first player in school history to post back-to-back games with multiple touchdown catches.  He had a school-record four in the 2019 finale against Arkansas State, while also recording the program’s first consecutive 100-yard receiving games since Jamarius Way accomplished the feat on Sept. 15 and 22, 2018. The junior wide receiver gave South the lead for good when he took the third play of the game 73 yards for a touchdown, scoring again with a 31-yard reception to cap the Jags’ opening possession of the second half before adding a 31-yard catch on fourth down to keep a drive alive later in the quarter that resulted in a field goal and a 23-13 advantage.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nick Mobley, South Alabama
Mobley led all players with a career-high 14 stops in the win over the Golden Eagles, with half of those and a quarterback hurry coming after USM’s offense had reached the USA-20. In addition to recording a third-down tackle to end Southern Miss first possession of the night, the junior posted three stops in the red zone on drives that resulted in a field goal and a missed field-goal attempt. It was the first time Mobley has reached double digits in tackles since South visited Texas State on Nov. 9 a year ago.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Blake Grupe, Arkansas State
Sophomore kicker Blake Grupe connected on his only field goal attempt and was 3-of-3 on extra point attempts to finish Arkansas State’s game at Memphis with six points. Grupe’s field goal was from 28 yards out and helped run his career points total to 193. In the process, Grupe took over ninth place at Arkansas State for career points scored. Grupe has now made 50 consecutive extra points, the third longest streak in school history.
