App State—at No. 22/24 Miami at 6 p.m. on ESPNU—and Georgia State—at No. 24/22 UNC at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN3—will visit Top 25-ranked opponents on Saturday.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS – No. 17/19 Coastal Carolina will host a Power Five opponent on the Surf Turf in Brooks Stadium for the first time when it welcomes Kansas at 6:30 p.m. Friday night on ESPN2. The Chanticleers are 2-0 in the all-time series against the Jayhawks, defeating Kansas 12-7 on Sept. 7, 2019, and 38-23 on Sept. 12, 2020. Coastal Carolina is coming off an 11-1 campaign in 2020, including a 11-0 regular-season mark. Kansas went 0-9 in 2020, but did snap its 13-game losing streak with a 17-14 win over South Dakota on Sept. 3.
- GOING BOWLING – South Alabama will face its first road test of the 2021 season when it visits Bowling Green at 3 p.m. Saturday on ESPN+. The matchup will be the first between the two programs since they met in the inaugural Camellia Bowl on Dec. 20, 2014. That game was the first-ever bowl appearance for the Jaguars, whose football program was established in 2009. Bowling Green led throughout, until South Alabama took a 28-27 lead with 80 seconds remaining. The Falcons scored a 78-yard touchdown on the first play of the ensuing possession to claim a 33-28 victory.
- TANGLING WITH THE TOP 25 – App State and Georgia State will each visit a Top 25-ranked opponent looking to rebound from a Week 1 loss on Saturday. App State will take on No. 22/24 Miami at 6 p.m. on ESPNU. The Hurricanes dropped their season-opener to No. 1/1 Alabama, 44-13, on Sept. 4. Despite their infamous 34-32 victory over No. 5/5 Michigan on Sept. 1, 2007, the Mountaineers still looking for their first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent since joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2014. Georgia State will face off against No. 24/22 UNC at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN3. The Tar Heels fell to Virginia Tech, 17-10, in their season-opener on Sept. 3. The Panthers are also looking for their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since starting their football program in 2010.
- FAMILIAR FOE – Separated by just 75 miles and a state line, Arkansas State will host a familiar foe in Memphis at 6 p.m. Saturday on ESPN+. The Red Wolves have squared off against the Tigers more than any other opponent in program history—Saturday’s matchup will be the 60th all-time meeting between the two schools. Memphis leads the all-time series 30-23-5, though the Red Wolves have won the last three games (2012, 2011 and 2007) between the two programs in Jonesboro.
- HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE – The home team has won each of the prior three meetings between Liberty and Troy—a history that favors the Trojans, who host the Flames at 6 p.m. Saturday on ESPN+. Troy has accumulated at least 400 yards of total offense in 17-of-24 games under head coach and play caller Chip Lindsey, including its season-opening 55-3 rout of Southern on Sept. 4. The Trojans are 0-7 when failing to reach the 400-yard plateau. A win Saturday would give Troy its first 2-0 start since 2013.
