Appalachian State, Georgia State, Georgia Southern Earn Wins on Monday Night

Georgia State beats Chicago State 69-46

ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP) Ryan Harrow scored 16 of his 23 points in the first half on Monday, and Georgia State beat Chicago State 69-46 in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at Oakland University.

Georgia State (2-2) jumped ahead 18-3, built a 36-13 halftime lead and maintained its advantage after an even second half.

R.J. Hunter and Curtis Washington added 11 points apiece for the Panthers.

Anthony Glover had 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting to lead Chicago State (2-3), but the rest of the Cougars were 8 of 37 (21.6 percent) from the field.

Clarke Rosenberg's 3-pointer capped Chicago State's 13-3 second-half run that closed the deficit to 53-34 with 7:22 left. Rosenberg added 14 points for the Cougars, who had 12 offensive rebounds but turned the ball over 23 times.

Appalachian State holds off Hampton in 82-74 win

BOONE, N.C. (AP) Frank Eaves scored a career-high 25 points, Chris Burgess added a career-high 20 and Appalachian State edged Hampton 82-74 on Monday night in the first-ever meeting between the programs.

Appalachian State (2-2) opened with a 13-2 burst fueled by Eaves and Burgess and capped with a Jacob Lawson dunk. The Mountaineers took a 43-36 advantage into the break and held off Hampton (1-4) in the second half.

Griffin Kinney added 13 points, also a career high, and six rebounds for Appalachian State, which shot 44.2 percent from the floor but was 31 of 38 from the free throw line in its season home opener.

Hampton was led by Brian Darden, who scored 20 before fouling out. Deron Powers added 13 points and dished out five assists, Quinton Chievous had 11 plus seven rebounds.

Georgia Southern edges FIU in 78-72 win

STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) Jelani Hewitt scored 33 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, to lift Georgia Southern to a 78-72 win over Florida International on Monday.

After a series of lead changes, Georgia Southern (4-1) pushed ahead for good midway through the first period with a 6-0 spurt capped by back-to-back Hewitt layups to make it 21-16 with 7:48 to go in the half. The Eagles took a 34-30 advantage into the break and hung on through the second half, shooting just 37.7 percent from floor overall but going 31 of 41 from the free throw line.

Trent Wiedeman and Curtis Diamond added 11 points apiece, while Mike Hughes had nine points and 11 rebounds in the win.

Florida International (3-1) kept the game close, shooting better from the field (44.1 percent) than the Eagles but getting fewer trips to the free throw line.

Adrian Diaz led FIU with 33 points.

Milwaukee beats UL Lafayette 56-52

LAS VEGAS (AP) Steve McWhorter had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Milwaukee snapped a two-game skid on Monday with a 56-52 win over UL Lafayette in the MGM Grand Main Event tournament.

McWhorter assisted Matt Tiby's layup to give the Panthers (2-3) the lead for good at 52-51 with 43 seconds left.

Milwaukee followed with a defensive stop and Justin Jordan and Tiby hit both their free throws on consecutive trips to the line to secure the win.

UL Lafayette (1-3) trailed 24-14 at halftime, but the Ragin' Cajuns rallied to a 44-38 lead on Brian Williams' three-point play with 7:08 left.

Milwaukee went back in front with a 9-1 run, and the teams battled back-and-forth from there.

Williams and Xavian Rimmer led Lafayette with 12 points each, and Devonta Walker added 10.
