Troy Topples Georgia Southern in its Opening Match of the Women's Soccer Championship

EMERSON, Ga. – Second-seeded Troy opened up the Sun Belt Women's Soccer Championship with a 3-0 shutout victory over No. 7 Georgia Southern on Wednesday at LakePoint Sporting Community in Emerson, Ga.

Troy (14-4-1) and Georgia Southern (6-11-2) both didn’t have a shot in the game until the 22nd minute when Jasmine Fahrnbauer scored the game-winning goal off an Alissa Jones corner kick from the left side of the field.

The Trojans didn’t score again until the second half, but scored two goals within five minutes. Abby Reynolds gave Troy a 2-0 advantage in the 77th minute when she took a Claire Taylor pass into the middle field and found the back of the net after breaking away from the Eagles defenders.

Then in the 82nd minute Natalie Melillo scored her first goal of the season when she ripped a shot from the right side of the field that went to the left of the keeper to put the Trojans up 3-0.

Trojan All-Sun Belt First Team goalkeeper, Mikki Lewis, earned her ninth shutout of the season and had three saves in the match.

Troy fired nine shots in the match and landed six on goal. Melillo lead all players with three shots and two on goal. Fahrnbauer had two and four other Trojans had one shot.

Georgia Southern was held to just five shots the entire match; four of them came in the second half.

The Trojans will return to the pitch on Friday at 7 p.m. ET and will play the winner of Wednesday's final quarterfinal match between No. 3 Texas State and No. 6 Georgia State.
