Georgia Southern Softball Drops Non-Conference Tilt at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Georgia Southern Softball suffered a non-conference defeat at South Carolina, dropping the 8-0 run-rule decision in six innings. The Eagles face Mississippi State this weekend for a pair of games beginning on Saturday at 3 p.m.

“We improved with the way we played today over Sunday’s contest,” said Head Coach Annie Smith. “It is always challenging when you come into an SEC ballpark as the visitor, but we did a lot of things right tonight and I really feel like the game was much closer than you would see from the final score.”

South Carolina was quickly on the board getting two runs in the first, followed by a run in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Three more tallies in the fourth gave the home team a 6-0 lead entering the fifth inning.

The Eagles had a golden chance in the fifth, as Rowan McGuire’s slicing double to left in the fifth found grass to put runners on second and third with no outs. Georgia Southern, however, was unable to scratch a run as two were left aboard in the frame.

The Gamecocks hit a solo home run in the fifth to go up 7-0. A leadoff single paved the way for a run in the sixth which ended the contest on the run rule. A squeeze play to third did the damage to close the night.

Lexi Allen added a perfectly placed bunt single in the first, while Emily Snider lashed a single up the middle in the sixth.

The Eagles have two more games against a SEC foe this weekend as Mississippi State comes to Eagle Field for a pair of games. First pitch on Saturday is set for 3 p.m. with a Sunday finale at Noon.
