Upsets Dominate Saturday Slate

South Alabama upsets UT Arlington 88-85 in overtime

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) Shaq Calhoun drilled a 3-pointer late in overtime and South Alabama upset UT Arlington 88-85 on Saturday.

Texas-Arlington's Erick Neal hit a jumper to tie it at 85 with 40 seconds left in overtime, but Calhoun responded with a 3 on the next possession, and the Mavericks missed three 3-point attempts in the last seven seconds.

Calhoun finished with 12 points. Georgi Boyanov scored 24 points with 11 boards and Ken Williams had 23 for the Jaguars (7-10, 2-4 Sun Belt).

Kevin Hervey scored 24 points with 11 rebounds for the Mavericks (13-3, 4-1). Neal finished with 17 points, Kaelon Wilson scored 13 points and Jalen Jones had 10.

South Alabama led 43-34 at intermission. UT Arlington clawed back with a 16-2 run and led 78-69 with 3:22 to go.

Williams hit a 3 with 1:41 left to get South Alabama within three, and Boyanov's free throws with 21 seconds left forced overtime.

Long leads UL Lafayette to 87-54 win over Georgia St.

ATLANTA (AP) Shawn Long had his 11th double-double of the season - 23 points and 18 rebounds - as UL Lafayette handed Georgia State its first home loss this season, 87-54 on Saturday.

Georgia State won 15 straight at home and was 33-1 on the home floor dating back to the 2013-14 season before the Ragin' Cajuns came to town.

Long scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the second half. Kasey Shepherd was 5 of 11 from long range for 19 points and Hayward Register, who nailed 4 of 7 from beyond the arc, finished with 15 points for Louisiana-Lafayette (7-8, 3-3 Sun Belt).

The Panthers, leading 35-31 at the break, shot 64 percent in the second half to win that period 52-23.

Kevin Ware led Georgia State (11-4, 4-2) with 19 points and nine rebounds and Jeremy Hollowell added 14 points.

Appalachian State overwhelms Arkansas State in 86-72 win

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) Frank Eaves scored 31 points to lead Appalachian State to an 86-72 victory over Arkansas State on Saturday night for its first win on the road.

It was Eaves' third game this season with 30 points or more. And like last year, the Mountaineers (4-13, 2-5 Sun Belt Conference) handed Arkansas State (8-8, 4-1) its first conference loss of the season.

Eaves shot 9 for 17 from the field, including seven 3-pointers, and had seven rebounds.

Anthony Livingston scored 29 points with 15 rebounds, three blocks and two steals to lead Arkansas State.

Appalachian State led 13-0 before the Red Wolves scored with 14:17 remaining in the first half. Jacob Lawson hit back-to-back jumpers to stretch the Mountaineers' lead to 20-3. Appalachian State built a 47-30 halftime lead and led by double digits the rest of the way.

Georgia Southern cruises past UL Monroe 66-51

STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) Mike Hughes scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half as Georgia Southern built an 11-point halftime lead and cruised to a 66-51 victory on Saturday night.

Ike Smith had 14 points and Tookie Brown added 12 for Georgia Southern (6-10, 2-4 Sun Belt), which bounced back from a 74-65 loss at home to UL Lafayette on Jan 14.

Justin Roberson scored 20 points to lead UL Monroe (6-11, 2-4), which has lost four straight. Majok Deng chipped in 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Georgia Southern led 32-21 at halftime, and 43-31 at the 13-minute mark. Deng made a 3-pointer and Roberson scored five points to pull the Warhawks to 43-39 with 11 minutes remaining.

Smith and Boykins scored five points apiece as part of 13-3 surge to stretch Georgia Southern's lead to 56-42 with five minute left, and the Eagles had a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Troy downs Texas State 66-57 behind Person, Walton

TROY, Ala. (AP) Wesley Person scored 23 points with four 3-pointers, John Walton III added 14 with 13 rebounds, and Troy beat Texas State 66-57 on Saturday, ending a six-game skid with its first Sun Belt Conference win.

Leading by six at halftime, Person and Jeremy Hollimon hit consecutive 3-pointers and Troy led 48-36 with 13:19 left.

The Bobcats gained on a 9-3 run and closed to within 56-51 on a 3-pointer by Ethan Montalvo with six minutes left.

Jeremy Hollimon made back-to-back layups to spark an 8-3 run and Troy was in control 66-54 with 52 seconds left.

Hollimon scored 13 points for the Trojans (6-11, 1-5), who outrebounded the Bobcats 39-23 and outscored them 32-20 in the paint.

Person has hit a 3-pointer in all 46 of his career games, which is the longest active streak in the country.

Emani Grant scored 13 points, Kavin Gilder-Tilbury and Cameron Naylor had 12 apiece, and Montalvo 10 for Texas State (8-6, 2-3).
