ARLINGTON, Texas – Top-seeded Arkansas State dispatched of No. 8 Georgia State, downing the Panthers in straight sets in the 2016 Sun Belt Volleyball Championship first round at College Park Center. A-State swept the Panthers 25-20, 25-17 and 25-11 to advance to the semifinals for the fifth consecutive season.
Arkansas State (24-7), the defending conference champion, improved to 29-20 all-time in the Sun Belt Championship tournament. Georgia State's season came to a close with an overall record of 10-18. The Red Wolves advanced to meet the winner of Match 4 (UT Arlington vs. Little Rock) on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. (CT). The win was the 12th-consecutive for the Red Wolves dating back to Oct. 7.
The win gave ASU head coach David Rehr his 500th-career win. Rehr is now 500-116 in 17 seasons and 107-53 in five years at ASU.
Carlisa May led the Red Wolves with 10 kills, the lone player in the match with double digits on either side in the kill category. ASU hit .221 compared to GSU's .041 in the match.
Setter of the Year, Mallory Warrington, led the Red Wolves with 32 assists and added an additional nine digs. Kenzie Fields had 12 digs for ASU and nine kills.
Sarah Renner led the way for GSU with 20 assists while Kristina Stinson had nine kills and an attack percentage of .368.
