Red Wolves advance to second consecutive final

ARLINGTON, Texas - Top-seeded Arkansas State cruised to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-14) sweep over No. 4 UT Arlington in the semifinals of the 2016 Volleyball Championship at College Park Center on Saturday evening.

A-State claimed a straight-set victory for the second time in the tournament and advances to Sunday's finale to take on No. 2 Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m. (CT). Coastal defeated Texas State earlier in the day to advance to its first Sun Belt volleyball title match.

The Red Wolves (25-7) never trailed in set one, leading from start to finish. They had a match-high 16 kills in set one with a .238 attack percentage. UTA (17-16) threatened in the second set, leading the Red Wolves 13-8 in the early going, before A-State rallied off five consecutive points to tie the match at 13-all.

ASU closed out set two on a 12-4 run with back-to-back kills by Kelsey Reis as the teams went to the break.

The Red Wolves took a commanding 16-6 lead in the third and deciding set and never looked back en route to the 25-14 set win.

Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year, Carlisa May, led the Red Wolves with 19 kills and a .533 attack percentage while Mallory Warrington added 42 assists in the three sets. The Red Wolves tallied 47 kills to UTA's 27 and outhit the Mavericks .291 to .070.

Markie Schaedig had 23 digs for the Red Wolves.

UTA's Qiana Cañete led the Mavericks with eight kills and 12 digs on the night. Taylor Murata added 19 digs for the hosts and Cassidy Wheeler made 21 assists.

Sunday's championship will be a showcase of the two best teams in the Sun Belt as each won 15 matches in regular season play and are a combined 51-11. Coastal is riding a 16-match winning streak while A-State is riding a 13-match winning streak.
