Troy Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Earns Series Win
TROY, Alabama – The Troy baseball team won both games of a doubleheader, 5-0 and 6-1, against Northern Kentucky on Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field and earned the opening series win.
Troy (3-0) picked up 20 combined hits and outscored Northern Kentucky (0-3) 11-1 on the day. Eight hits and five runs came in the first game, while 12 hits and six runs came in the second.
Game 1 – Troy 5, Northern Kentucky 0
Lucas Brown (1-0) carried the team on the mound as he pitched eight innings, only allowed four hits and didn’t surrender a single run. The senior from Acworth, Ga., only threw four pitches in the first inning and 12 of his first 13 pitches were strikes. The performance from Brown was the longest outing of his career without allowing a run to score.
The Trojan bats gave Brown an early confidence boost as a Trevor Davis double to left center scored Matt Sanders, who reached on a walk and gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead. TJ Binder got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the inning and put Troy up 2-0.
Troy picked up three more runs throughout the game. Chase Smartt singled to right field in the third inning and scored Joey Denison. The RBI single was Smartt’s first collegiate RBI.
Another run crossed the plate on a double play in the sixth and Brandon Lockridge hit an RBI triple to score Windham Jackson, who reached on a fielder’s choice.
Marc Skinner made his first appearance of the season as he closed out the ninth inning on eight pitches.
Lockridge went 2-for-5 in the game and five other Trojans picked up a hit. TJ Binder and Bert Givens picked up their first hit of the season and Davis also picked up his first RBI as a Trojan.
Jordan Menfee (0-1) suffered the loss for the Norse. He pitched five innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits.
The game only lasted one hour and 44 minutes. It was the shortest nine-inning game recorded over the past 10 seasons.
Game 2 – Troy 6, Northern Kentucky 1
The Trojans used a big sixth inning and plated three runs and extended their lead to 6-1. Denison scored the first run of the inning as Smartt hit an RBI single through the left side. Two batters later, pinch hitter Justin Friend blasted a 3-2 pitch to left center field for a two-run double on his first appearance of the young season.
Reid Long scored the first run of the game in the second inning as he hit his first home run of the year, a solo shot to right field. In the third inning, Davis doubled to center field and knocked in Sanders, who reached on a single. Davis advanced to third on an error by the center fielder and scored four pitches later on a sacrifice fly by Denison that gave the Trojans a 3-0 lead.
Northern Kentucky cut the deficit to two runs in the fourth inning as Trey Ganns scored on a Conor Ledger groundout to third base.
Evan Hebert (1-0) earned the win for the Trojans; he pitched six innings and only allowed one run on four hits. Hebert walked two batters, but struck out three.
Skinner and Johns each pitched one inning in relief for Hebert. Corey Childress made his first appearance of the season as he pitched on inning and got three outs on five pitches in the ninth.
Three Trojans had multi-hit games in Matt Sanders, who went 2-for-4; and Tripp Calhoun and Joey Denison, who each went 2-for-3.
Troy will send true freshman Cory Gill to toe the rubber for the series finale, which will begin on Sunday at 1 p.m.
A-State Baseball Takes Opening Series from UAB with Doubleheader Split
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (2/20/16) – The Arkansas State baseball team dropped the first game of a doubleheader Saturday to UAB 5-0, but defeated the Blazers 5-2 in the second game to earn a season-opening series win at Regions Field in Birmingham, Ala.
In game two, UAB (1-2) scored a single run in each of the first two innings for a 2-0 edge before A-State (2-1) struck back with two runs in the top of the third. Jeremy Brown was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Ty White singled to center to put the first two runners on. Joe Schrimpf sacrificed the runners up a base before Austin Baker was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tanner Ring drove home the first run with a hard single through the left side before Garrett Rucker brought home the second run on a sacrifice fly to center field.
The game remained tied 2-2 until the top of the ninth inning when A-State mounted a two-out rally that scored three runs on only one hit. Jake Bakamus was hit by a pitch and Frankie Alvarez also got hit by a pitch before Dylan Munger came to the mound for UAB. Munger walked Brown to load the bases and then White brought home the winning run with an infield single to the second baseman. A-State picked up two more runs on a wild pitch and error by the catcher on the play to make the score 5-2.
Ring entered the game on the mound in relief of J.D. Miller and walked the first batter he faced, but induced a double play and struck out the next hitter for the save in his first action on the mound since 2014. Miller picked up the win after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings.
A-State starter Bryan Ayers tossed six innings in his first appearance on the mound since the 2014 season. Ayers allowed two runs (one earned) on 10 hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Collin Nord pitched to one hitter and struck him out on three pitches. UAB’s starter Adam Lamar lasted 2.2 innings while Austin Thomas tossed six innings out of the bullpen for the Blazers but took the loss.
White led the team with two hits, while Baker and Ring had the other two hits for the Red Wolves. Griffin Gum led UAB with three hits.
UAB began game one strongly by registering a run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly off A-State starter Adam Grantham. The first two batters of the game reached on infield singles before a fly ball to deep left moved both runners up a base to set up the sacrifice fly.
The Blazers extended the lead to 3-0 after hitting three consecutive doubles in the bottom of the fourth inning and tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth on a Carter Pharis home run to take a 4-0 lead. UAB added another run on an error in the seventh inning and A-State couldn’t muster any offense as the Red Wolves lost 5-0.
Grantham was solid on the mound as the senior allowed seven hits and gave up four runs (all earned) with seven strikeouts with no walks. Freshmen Bradey Welsh and Peyton Culbertson each pitched an inning to close out the contest with Welsh giving up one unearned run.
White doubled to lead off the game for one of A-State’s three hits. Brown and Matt Burgess each had singles for the other two hits of the game.
UAB’s Ryan Ruggles earned the win by throwing six shutout innings, while Thomas Lowery picked up the save by tossing three scoreless innings to end the game. Gum and Carter Pharis each had two hits and two RBIs with Pharis hitting the Blazers’ first home run of the season.
Arkansas State returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 23 against Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss. First pitch from Oxford University Stadium/Swayze Field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Cowboys Even Score With 5-3 Win Over Mavs
ARLINGTON, Texas – The No. 7 Oklahoma State Cowboys staked themselves to a 4-0 lead and held off a comeback attempt from UT Arlington in picking up a 5-3 win over the Mavericks on Saturday at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Caleb Koedyker and Quintin Rohrbaugh each picked up a pair of hits apiece for UTA (1-2), but the Mavs struggled to take advantage of opportunities early on, eventually leaving 10 runners on the base paths. OSU (2-1) starter Jensen Elliott was a tough draw for UTA in his collegiate debut, picking up the win in tossing 5.0 shutout innings with five strikeouts and no walks.
Jake Wilcox took the loss for the Mavs, allowing four runs on five hits with three punch outs in 6.0 innings. He allowed a two-run home run to OSU’s Dustin Williams two batters into the second inning before retiring 11 of the next 12 Cowboys he faced.
OSU added another run in the top of the third on an RBI ground out from Jon Littell, and one more in the sixth on a fielder’s choice before UTA was able to get on the board.
The Mavs could not cash in on a golden opportunity with the bases loaded in the first and a second-and-third opportunity in the fourth; however, the Mavs cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth when Brady Cox dumped an RBI single into right-center field to score Colton Turner. Two batters later Matt McLean picked up his first RBI of the year with a bases-loaded walk to cut the OSU lead to 4-2.
But the Cowboys answered with a run in the eighth on a fly ball from Conor Costello and turned the ball over to Michael Mertz, who pitched the final 2.0 innings to pick up the save. It did not come easy, though, as UTA put together a rally in the ninth when Koedyker lined a double into the left-center field gap to score McLean who had reached on a one-out walk. That brought the tying run to the plate, but Mertz was able to retire both Christian Hollie and Turner to close things out.
UTA will finish off the Clay Gould Classic on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. when they take on Stephen F. Austin.
Big Offense, Stellar Pitching Yields Impressive Victory for Bobcats
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State busted Saturday’s game wide open with six runs in the second inning and kept the pressure on throughout the game thanks to 13 hits, including a near-cycle for senior Cody Lovejoy. With the offense booming, Jeremy Hallonquist carved up the Washington State offense, only allowing four hits in seven scoreless innings en route to a 10-1 victory for the Bobcats.
Lovejoy finished the day with a triple, single and double, coming a home run short of the famed cycle. He was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, but he wasn’t the only Bobcat who brought the offense. Jonathan Ortega, Granger Studdard and Theodore Hoffman each added two hits apiece while combining for three RBI. Three other Bobcats added a hit each. In addition to Lovejoy, Ortega and Hoffman both scored twice.
On the mound, Hallonquist simply stymied the Cougars. Washington State kept hitting into Texas State’s strong defense. Lovejoy made a running catch at the wall. Luke Sherley showed his arm strength with a nice throw from short to get the runner in time. Jaylen Hubbard made an impressive snag at third base to keep the ball in the infield, and the rest of the defense held strong throughout the day.
It was the second inning that propelled the Bobcats past Washington State Saturday afternoon. Nick Perez and Sherley knocked back-to-back singles to put men at first and second base, but both runners were in danger of being stranded after the second out of the inning. That’s when Texas State came alive.
The Bobcats knocked five consecutive hits with two outs to score six runs. Derek Scheible picked up an RBI with a hit up the middle to plate Perez, and Sherley came in off a single to left field from Ortega. Lovejoy started the day with a big triple to score two runs, and Studdard knocked a single through the left side to bring in Lovejoy. Continuing to work the left side of the field, Tanner Hill sent a rocket down the third base line to score Studdard before the Cougars could finally find their third out of the inning. In all, seven of Texas State’s 13 hits were extra-base hits.
In an effort to answer the Bobcats in the top of the third, Washington State grounded out twice, hit a single and flied out. The next two innings, the Cougars did not get a base runner while Texas State added three more runs. Hoffman started the third with a triple, and Perez brought him in with a sacrifice fly. In the fourth, Ortega knocked a double down the left line and came in on a Lovejoy single. Lovejoy scored on the next at-bat, a Studdard double.
Texas State would add an unearned run in the seventh inning after Hoffman belted a double to right centerfield while Washington State crossed the plate once in the ninth. Freshman Wes Engle kept the game under control in the final two innings though, striking out one Cougar and closing out the game.
For the second consecutive game, Texas State only threw two pitchers while Washington State burned four heading into the third game of a four-game series. Sunday, the Bobcats will put Jonathan Hennigan on the mound against freshman righty Parker McFadden for Washington State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
Panthers Lead Earl, Rally Late before Falling 8-6 to VCU
ATLANTA -- Georgia State led early, but a late rally came up short as the Panthers fell 8-6 to VCU Saturday at the GSU Baseball Complex in Game 2 of the Atlanta Challenge.
Ryan Blanton homered for Georgia State (1-1), and Jaylen Woullard had two hits and two RBI.
The Panthers took a 3-0 lead Blanton's solo blast in the first inning and then two-out RBIs by Jarrett Hood and Joey Roach in the third inning.
After VCU (2-0), an NCAA Super Regional participant in 2015, scored two in the fourth, Rhett Harper delivered a run-scoring single with two outs in the fourth for a 4-2 GSU advantage.
But the Rams pushed across two more runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth to move ahead 8-4.
The Panthers rallied on Woullard's two-run single in the eighth, also with two outs, to pull within 8-6 but could get no closer.
VCU starter Sean Thompson earned the victory with five innings of work in which he allowed four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts. Sam Donko got the final four outs to earn his first save.
Georgia State starter Devin Vainer allowed four runs on just two hits but hurt himself with seven walks in four-plus innings. After issuing just one walk in Friday's 12-inning victory, the GSU staff walked 10 Saturday.
"The difference in the game was not about effort, it was about execution," head coach Greg Frady said. "The pace of play was not in our favor, and we walked too many people. When you issue a lot of freebies, it's just hard to get that defensive momentum you want.
"We just really couldn't stop them. Even though we never really gave up the big inning, they were getting a run or two per inning through the middle part when we let the game get away from us.
"It's disappointing, but we have a new team that we're learning a lot about," Frady continued. "I was pleased with the effort, and now we have to get some rest and get ready to come out here tomorrow to try to win the first weekend series in this Atlanta Challenge."
The Atlanta Challenge concludes Sunday as the Panthers host Purdue at 1 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
Trojans Take Down Kansas for First Win of 2016
LITTLE ROCK – In the second day of the 2016 season, Little Rock baseball (1-1) earned its first win of the year with a 4-2 victory over Kansas (0-1) on Saturday at Gary Hogan Field.
Newcomer Will Hazen had a strong performance on the mound as he went seven innings and picked up the win with three strikeouts while allowing just two runs, four hits and two walks in his Trojan debut.
Senior outfielder Ryan Scott put in some quality at-bats as he went 2 for 3 with a two-run home run and a walk.
"The difference between last night and tonight for me was throwing the ball over the plate and eliminating the walks," head coach Chris Curry said. "Will Hazen did an amazing job, and that's how he's pitched since he's been here. We got some timely hits and played error-free baseball. That's a recipe for a win against a good club."
Little Rock got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning with two runs. Kyle Kirk walked to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a double off the left-center field wall. Zach Baker then hit an RBI single to first as Kirk scored the Trojans first run. After Baker was picked off at first by Kansas' starter and 2015 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Ben Krauth, Cameron Knight delivered an RBI single to right as Gifford crossed the plate to put Little Rock up 2-0.
The Jayhawks retaliated in the top of the third inning. Tommy Mirabelli singled to lead off the inning. With one out, Colby Wright doubled down the left field line to place runners at second and third. After a Hazen strikeout, Matt McLaughlin singled to left and scored Mirabelli and Wright, but he would be tagged out between first and second as the inning ended in a 2-2 tie.
Still tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Hayden Martin singled to left, but was forced out at second on an attempted sacrifice bunt by Hunter Owens. With Owens on first, Scott delivered what ended up being the game-winning blow with a two-run blast over right field wall as Little Rock took a 4-2 lead.
After seven dominant innings by Hazen, junior Keenan Wingfield made his Trojan debut out of the bullpen with two hitless innings as he picked up the save.
Little Rock's win over Kansas marks the third victory over the Jayhawks all-time and is the first over the Big 12-foe since 2003. All three of the Trojans' wins against the Jayhawks have come at Gary Hogan Field. This is Little Rock's first victory over a Big 12 school since beating Oklahoma on the road in 2014.
Little Rock will have little time to celebrate as the Trojans close out the weekend with Indiana State (3-0) tomorrow at 1 p.m., at Gary Hogan Field.
Offense Carries No. 13 Cajuns to 6-2 Win over Sam Houston State
LAFAYETTE, La. – The sixth-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team used a four-run seventh inning to claim a 6-2 victory over Sam Houston State in front of a crowd of 4,646 Saturday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
"I thought we did a goob job as hitters today," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "We are swinging better. We started swinging looser, and I knew that would happen. JT (Jeremy Talbot) and Bab (Anthony Babineaux) do a great job with out hitters, and right now pitching hopefully should be ahead of hitters. So hopefully we can come out tomorrow and do the same script."
The win clinches the series for the Cajuns (2-0) who have now won their last five home opening series at "The Tigue".
Louisiana outhit the Bearkats (0-2) 12-6 in the contest with Joe Robbins, Kyle Clement, Steven Sensley, Nick Thurman and Ishmael Edwards each collecting a pair of hits. Clement had a game-high two RBI and a double, and both Robbins and Sensley homered in the contest to give the Ragin' Cajuns three in the series.
Starter Wyatt Marks picked up his first victory of the season after holding Sam Houston to one run on three hits in 6.1 innings of work. Marks had eight strikeouts in the outing and did not allow a free pass.
Freshman Hogan Harris tossed the final 2.2 innings of the game to earn his first career save. Harris limited the Bearkats to one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
SHSU starter Hayden Nixon was handed his first loss as he gave up one run on six hits in 1.2 innings.
Robbins put the Cajuns on the board in the bottom of the first as he launched a leadoff solo home run over the fence in left. The homer is Robbins' first of the season and fourth of his career.
In the bottom of the fourth, Sensley blasted his first career home run well over the fence in right field to extend the Louisiana advantage to 2-0.
Sam Houston State notched a run in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI triple off of the wall in right by Spence Rahm to cut the Ragin' Cajuns lead to 2-1.
Louisiana exploded for four runs on four hits and an error to take a commanding 6-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and no outs, second baseman Brenn Conrad was hit by a pitch to bring home the first run of the inning.
Edwards scored on a passed ball later in the inning, before Clement singled in two runs to cap the scoring in the inning.
The Bearkats picked up the final run of the contest in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly to center by Hunter Hearn.
The Cajuns will go for the sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m. as freshman right-hander Nick Lee makes his debut in a Louisiana uniform. The game can be seen live on MyAcadianaTV, channel 13 on Cox and LUS. It will also be broadcast on KPEL 96.5 FM with Jay Walker making the call.
Early Deficit Proves Costly for ULM
HAMMOND, La. -- ULM was unable to overcome an early deficit as it fell, 8-2, to Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday afternoon at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
After scoring the game’s only runs in the eighth on Friday night, Southeastern (2-0) plated a pair in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Lions tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the second inning to extend their lead, 6-0.
The Warhawks (0-2) were able to break through with their first run of the contest in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, second baseman Anthony Herrera connected on a solo homer over the wall in left field.
Southeastern added a single run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo Ryan Byers.
ULM scratched across one run in the top of the seventh as Dalton Todd, who drew a walk to get on base, was able to score when Nathan Reynolds reached on a fielding error by second baseman Taylor Schwaner.
In the bottom of the seventh, Schwaner drove in a run as Southeastern set the final tally at 8-2.
Warhawk starting pitcher Josh Leone was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs (all earned) on seven hits and two walks in 1.2 innings of work.
Southeastern’s Mac Sceroler earned the win after allowing one earned run on one hit and three walks with six strikeouts in six innings of work.
Jaguars Shutout Evansville, 11-0
MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama baseball left-hander Thomas Huston tossed six scoreless innings and the Jaguars pounded out 15 hits en route to an 11-0 series-clinching win over Evansville Saturday at Stanky Field.
Huston (1-0) allowed just three hits and struck out three against two walks in six innings of work to earn his first career win at USA.
"I thought he was pretty good," head coach Mark Calvi said of Huston. "On the critical side, he was behind too many guys and had too many walks in there but he seemed to come up and make a pitch when he had to. His changeup was pretty good when he needed it. Moving forward and when we get into conference play, he is going to have to be better than that. But I am proud of the way he worked today; he gave us a chance to win and that's what we did."
Right-handers Harrison Spruiell, Jordan Schmits and John Barr each tossed one scoreless inning to combine with Huston in the shutout.
South Alabama (2-0) spotted Huston a four-run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Travis Swaggerty and Jared Barnes reached on consecutive singles to start the inning before Danny Martinez lifted a 2-2 pitch from UE right-hander Patrick Schnieders over the right-field wall for his first home run of the year and a 3-0 Jaguar lead. Ben Gann then reached on a fielding error by UE third baseman Jonathan Ramon before advancing to third on a double down the left field line by Carter Perkins. Brendan Donovan followed with an RBI single to right field to score Gann for a 4-0 USA advantage.
USA extended its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single to right field by Donovan, which plated Gann who reached on a single earlier in the inning.
The Jags added their sixth run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout to second by Martinez that scored Swaggerty, who reached on a leadoff walk.
South Alabama tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Ryan Raspino, an RBI double from Swaggerty and a wild pitch by Schnieders that plated Raspino to push its lead to 9-0.
The Jags added the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh on one-out RBI singles by Adam Wolfe and Barnes.
"We had multiple guys with RBI and (Danny) Martinez, Brendan Donovan and (Travis) Swaggerty each had really good days," Calvi said. "It was good to see those guys get out there and perform. We have a bunch of new guys, and we have some moving parts in the outfield that allows us to interchange; we can move some guys around and that's what we're going to do. We have two wins and we've been able to get some guys in there and move some around, so I have been pleased with that."
Schneiders (0-1) allowed nine runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks in the loss for the Purple Aces.
Donovan finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Jaguars at the plate. Barnes went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run, and Swaggerty finished 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and a pair of runs scored. Martinez added a home run and four RBI.
South Alabama will go for the series sweep in Sunday's series finale, which is set for a noon first pitch. Right-handed senior Austin Bembnowski is scheduled to start for the Jags.
Cleveland's Blast Gives Eagles 5-3 Win over Georgia
ATHENS, GA. – Georgia Southern got an outstanding debut pitching performance from Chase Cohen, but ultimately it was the extra innings hitting of Ryan Cleveland that gave the Eagles a 5-3 win over Georgia. Cohen threw five innings of one-hit ball, but saw a three-run advantage evaporate in the seventh inning. The bullpen, however, stopped the bleeding and forced extra innings. Cleveland blasted a two-out, full count pitch to center for the game winner.
WORDS FROM THE SKIPPER
"I was really proud of our guys, it was a great team win," said head coach Rodney Hennon. "Chase Cohen did a nice job in his first start and set a nice tone out of the gate. We kinda hurt ourselves there with the hit batsmen and walks to let them back in it. I was happy that we played pitch-to-pitch and Cleveland got the big knock in the 10th."
CO-PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Chase Cohen – RHP – FR – Alpharetta, Ga.
Freshman Chase Cohen was outstanding in his collegiate debut, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning and allowing just one hit in his 5.0 innings of work. He struck out seven batters and walked one, but did not factor in the decision after the Bulldogs tied the game in the seventh.
Ryan Cleveland – 1B – JR – Toccoa, Ga.
Ryan Cleveland went 2-for-4 on the day with three RBIs including the winning runs on his two-run home run in the 10th. The junior hit his 17th career home run on Saturday.
CRUCIAL MOMENTS
TOP 3RD – CJ Ballard sparked a two-run third inning with a one-out triple down the line in right. An RBI single by Kent Rollins put the Eagles on the board while Ryan Cleveland drove in Jordan Wren with two outs. Those runs gave the Eagles an early 2-0 lead.
BOTTOM 5TH – Georgia ended Cohen's no-hit bid when Michael Curry was awarded a single following what looked like a diving catch by Logan Baldwin in center. The call was overturned, but a 6-4-3 double play erased the base runner.
TOP 5TH – Georgia helped to gift the Eagles a run and make the lead 3-0 midway through the sixth. Ryan Cleveland took a pitch off his leg and made his way to third thanks to consecutive wild pitches. CJ Brazil drove him in with a sac fly to right.
BOTTOM 7TH – Georgia evened the score with a three-run frame in the seventh. A leadoff walk paved the way for Keegan McGovern to crush a home run off the scoreboard in right. A walk to the next batter came around to score via some small ball by the Bulldogs.
BOTTOM 9TH – Chris Brown gave up a leadoff walk and hit a batter to open the ninth inning. After a sacrifice bunt, UGA loaded the bases with an intentional walk. Brown, however got a line out to right and a pop up to the catcher to end the threat and send the game to extra innings.
TOP 10TH – CJ Ballard opened the extra frame with a single, but was cut down at third on Kent Rollins' sacrifice bunt attempt. Ryan Cleveland, however, did the damage with a big fly to center. The two-run home run scored Rollins and staked the Eagles to a 5-3 lead.
Appalachian State falls to No. 8 Virginia
