San Marcos, Texas – No. 2 seed South Alabama advanced to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship with a 3-0 win against No. 7 seed UT Arlington on Friday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.
South Alabama junior Randy Bell threw a complete game, three-hitter on just 89 pitches and added two strikeouts. Bell did not allow a runner past second until the ninth inning, and allowed just one to advance past first heading into the frame. The Jaguars (40-19) turned three double plays in support of their starter.
South Alabama advanced to the semifinals with the win and will face No. 6 seed Georgia Southern. By virtue of advancing from the loser’s bracket, the Jaguars must win two games against Georgia Southern to advance to the championship game. The first game is set for a 9 a.m. CT first pitch on Saturday with the “if necessary” game scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
UT Arlington was held scoreless in back-to-back games for the first time since the 1999 season. Mavericks junior Matt Michalski (1-5) took the loss after he went two innings and allowed one earned on three hits.
South Alabama scored a run each in the top of the first, second and fourth innings.
Sophomore Drew LaBounty started the game with a walk, junior Cole Billingsley singled and freshman Travis Swaggerty followed with a single to load the bases. Senior Danny Martinez grounded into a double play to plate LaBounty.
In the second, freshman Brendan Donovan walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by UT Arlington catcher Brady Cox. USA sophomore Jared Barnes grounded out to short to bring Donovan home.
Barnes then manufactured a run after he walked, was sacrificed to second and stole third and scored on a throwing error by Cox.
The 2016 Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship continues on Friday with one elimination game remaining in the night session (No. 5 Texas State vs. No. 8 Arkansas State – 6:30 p.m. CT). All games will take place at Bobcat Ballpark on the campus of Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.
