O’Grady Double Pushes Men’s Soccer Past Cornell in Double Overtime, 2-1

ONEONTA, NY – Three nights ago, Jamie O'Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk HS) and Hamish Ritchie (Aberdeen, Scotland/Aboyne Academy) provided all the Hartwick offense in a 3-0 conference win over App State. Tonight, it was O'Grady and Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) as the duo combined for both 'Wick goals in a 2-1 in double overtime victory over Cornell University Tuesday night under the lights of Elmore Field. O'Grady now has scored the Hawks' last eight goals dating back to September 19.

The game-winning tally came a minute and a half into the second overtime when Berry raced up the left sideline and delivered a perfect pass on the ground into the box to O'Grady who had time to bury his shot past Cornell's Mitchell Meyer.

Hartwick controlled the overtimes with a 5-0 edge in shots. In the opening 10-minute extra session, Ritchie had the Hawks' first shot with Darren Hamilton (Newcastle, England/East Central College) providing a pair. O'Grady had the last chance but he put his shot high. He made good on his next opportunity in the second overtime which ended the match and gave the Hawks' their second straight win. The team remains unbeaten in games which reach overtime at 2-0-1.

The Hawks got the game's opening goal on a counter attack in the 13th minute. O'Grady won a ball near midfield and played it to Berry who was sprung on a 2v1. Berry waited for O'Grady to catch up to the play, laid the ball off to him and he finished low to the far post for the go-ahead goal.

Cornell evened the match in the 40th minute. A low shot from 22 yards away eluded a diving Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) in the Hawks' goal. The shot deflected off the post and Jonathan Cullom, who had entered the game just seconds before, was there to clean up the rebound and tie the score.

Men's Soccer Bounces Back with Draw Versus Campbell

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's soccer (4-6-4) bounced back on Tuesday evening to a 1-1 draw against a formidable Campbell (8-5-2) squad at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.

App State showed great resiliency after falling to Hartwick on Saturday, 3-0, and even more grit facing a 1-0 deficit to the Camels.

Freshman Reed Hunnicutt connected with fellow freshman Justin Pruitt in the 67th minute to tie up the contest at 1-apiece. It was Pruitt's first collegiate goal and a team-leading third assist of the season. Pruitt becomes the sixth freshman of the season to score for the Black and Gold. Pruitt had another clean look before it was blocked four minutes later while Raheem Somersall fired off an attempt inside the box but deflected off a defender.

"We're very proud of the guys' effort and togetherness," head coach Jason O'Keefe said. "To rebound from our worst performance of the year on Saturday versus a very good Campbell team after going down a goal was the heart we have been looking for. We got more shots off tonight and did a bunch of good things. We need to recover and get focused for Georgia State, a top team in the Sun Belt."

The Mountaineers wouldn't get off another shot the rest of the way, but the defense clamped down after JJ Donnelly scored to put the Camels up 1-0. Appalachian got back to its usual way on the defensive side following a season-high three goals at home against the Hawks. App held a Camels squad that scored a season-best four times against Longwood in its most recent outing to a shutout in the first half and just one score.

Returning from injury for the first time was sophomore goalkeeper Jake Agnew, who stopped five Campbell shot attempts, including two big saves in the first overtime period.

Appalachian held a 13-10 shot advantage with the SOG tied at 6-all. Juan Hernandez and Pruitt each had two shots on the frame with Austin Hill and Rob Cornelius netting a shot on goal. The Black and Gold also posted a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.

UAB Scores Twice To Edge GS Men's Soccer, 2-1, On Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB scored a pair of goals to overcome a one-goal deficit and claim a 2-1 non-conference men's collegiate soccer victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Tuesday evening at BBVA Compass Field in Birmingham, Ala.

The loss was the first for the Eagles (6-6) in away games this season, while UAB (4-5-3) remained unbeaten on its home field in 2017. Georgia Southern will return to conference play on Saturday, traveling to Oneonta, N.Y., to face Hartwick on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Eagles struck first in the 23rd minute as a through ball from Nick Wells sent Victor Gustafsson into the box one-on-one with the keeper. Gustafsson's shot clipped the keeper but bounced into the net for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.

It didn't take long for the Blazers to equalize as Ryan Sullivan drilled a shot from about 22' out in the 29th minute to make the score 1-1. The score would remain tied at the break, with UAB enjoying an 11-7 edge in shots.

In the second half, each team tested the other keeper in the first 15 minutes as Chris Reichman's shot was saved by the Eagles' Robert Flott in the 53rd minute, while Gustafsson's shot in the 59th minute was turned away by James Teal.

UAB would break the deadlock in the 75th minute. A shot from Aidan O'Hara hit the crossbar, bounced down and teammate Massimo Ferrin would head it in to make the score 2-1.

The best chance for the Eagles to equalize in the final moments came in the 85th minute when Javier Carbonell was fouled just outside the box by the Blazers. Carbonell, who has two goals on free kicks this season, hit a bouncing shot that Teal turned away to preserve the one-goal lead.

"This was a tough loss for us," Head Coach John Murphy said. "I'm disappointed with the result, but I think we can take some good things from it. I think the pace of the game got away from us. We've got to do a better job of retaining the ball, to break up the opposition's tempo. At times we were outplayed, and that was disappointing as there shouldn't be that much of a gulf between the two teams.

"I do think we started well, Victor scored a great goal on a brilliant ball from Nick Wells. Robert Flott made a couple of good saves to keep it close, and our center backs Gonzalo Talavera and Justin Little stood out tonight as a pairing. But now, we've got to recover and prepare for a trip up to New York for a very important league game at Hartwick on Saturday."

The Blazers would finish the match with a 14-11 edge in shots. Teal would finish the game with six saves in net for UAB, while Flott made five saves in net for the Eagles. Georgia Southern had a season-high 12 corner kicks on the night, while UAB had five. Ten fouls were whistled on the Eagles and seven on the Blazers, and each team was offsides three times in the contest.
