Stingy Defensive Battle Leads to Tie for Mountaineers

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's soccer (3-2-5) showcased a stingy defensive performance against High Point (3-3-2) in a 0-0 draw on Saturday evening at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.

The shutout for App is the second in the last four matches while the Black and Gold have blanked their counterparts in back-to-back home games in 200-plus minutes of allowing zero goals. Jake Chasteen and the Mountaineer defense posted another clean sheet, and in five home contests, Appalachian has allowed just three scores.

Appalachian's defensive performance is even more impressive coming against a sound High Point team that scored a season-high three goals in its previous outing against UNC Asheville.

"We're very proud of the team tonight to shutout a good team like HPU," head coach Jason O'Keefe said following the match. "We will build on it and continue to get better. We are excited to open up Sun Belt play at Howard on Saturday."

The Mountaineers did have some clean looks at the frame but would nearly miss on the opportunities including two by Marc Pfrogner that went just high of the net, which would have given App the lead. In the final overtime period, Ian Bennett got off a clean look at the back of the net but just barely missed to the left of the goal.

Appalachian's backline forced some tough shots from High Point while getting just two shots on goal. Jake Chasteen came away with one stop while the defense came away with a team save as well.

Conference play opens up for App starting next Saturday, as the Mountaineers will face Howard on the road at 7 p.m.

Hawks Settle For 0-0 Draw With Bryant

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick and Bryant battled to a 0-0 tie through 110 minutes on Saturday evening on Elmore Field. The two teams combined for 33 shots in the match but neither could find the net on the night. The Hawks are now 4-5-1 on the season. The Bulldogs move to 0-7-1.

Hartwick would out-shoot Bryant 5-1 in the overtime periods. With less than a minute left in the first overtime, a pass from Hamish Ritchie (Aberdeen, Scotland/Aboyne Academy) sent in Jamie O'Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk HS) but he hammered his shot wide of the post. With less than three minutes left in the second extra session, passing to the left side of Bryant's goal from Jonny Carr (Sunderland, England/Monkwearmouth School) and Johnny McBeth (Glasgow, Scotland/Upper Iowa University) allowed a service from Ritchie across the box. O'Grady collected the pass and fired but it went wide of the target.

'Wick also had chances in the opening half starting roughly seven minutes in. A free kick from Ritchie was headed to the far post by McBeth. O'Grady was on the doorstep but his header was knocked away by Bryant keeper Nick Stewart. McBeth had a good look six minutes later following a pass from Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) but his effort was blocked by a Bulldog defender.

The Hawks staved off a Bulldog opportunity with 17 minutes left in the half. A header eluded Hartwick keeper Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) who had charged off his line to make a play. Defender Matt Morrish (Brighton, England/St. Bede's School) cleared the ball out of danger as it crept toward the goal line. Jack Philp (Edinburgh, Scotland/Currie Community HS) had a long-range shot two minutes later that was saved by Stewart.

Bryant held a 9-4 edge in shots in the second half. Wilson would be credited with six of his nine saves on the night in the half, although none were very troubling for the junior keeper.

Hartwick closed the night with a 17-15 advantage in shots. The Hawks earned three corners to the Bulldogs' two.

'Wick opens up Sun Belt Conference play next weekend. They travel to defending champion Coastal Carolina on Sunday, October 8. Match time is 2 p.m.
