Late Goal Sends CCU Past Hartwick
Conway - Romario Piggott's goal with 1:50 left in the match gave Coastal Carolina a 1-0 win over Hartwick, and in the process gave CCU a Sun Belt Conference victory.
The Chanticleers (5-6-0/1-1-0 SBC) dominated the match out shooting the Hartwick (5-6-1/0-1-0 SBC) 14-4 and six-to-four in shots on goal. It rained for most of the match making the conditions tough on both teams.
As the match wore on, the field became wet and muddy making it hard to control passes without the ball skipping on the wet turf.
CCU had plenty of chances to score in the game, but missed several shots on an open goal and had two offsides calls that hurt another two scoring chances.
The match looked to be heading into overtime before Carlos Becerra was able to touch a pass from the right side of the net to the streaking Piggot for the match-winner.
Braulio Linares-Ortiz played all 90 minutes in the goal picking up his third shutout of the season. He finished the match with four saves.
Scrambler, along with Martin Melchor and Becerra led the Chants attack with two shots each and the trio contributed for four of the team's shots on goal.
The Chants will be back on the road for its next two matches beginning with a trip to Old Dominion slated for October 14. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

STATESBORO, Ga.- The Georgia State men’s soccer team earned its first conference win of the season over rival Georgia Southern Saturday night. Junior Hannes Burmeister scored the game-winner, his second of the season.
With the win, the Panthers improved to 8-4 (1-0 SBC) and the Eagles fell to 5-5 (1-1 SBC).
Georgia State put five shots on the board in the first half, with just two on target. Kyle Clinton put the Panthers up 1-0 at the 32-minute mark, netting the ball off a free throw from Liam Fitzsimmons.
Coming out of halftime, the Eagles tied the match quickly off a free kick in the 48th minute. Burmeister was able to score what proved to be the game-winner off a penalty kick in the 61st minute, with Rashid Alarape putting the game away at the 87-minute mark on an unassisted goal.
Georgia Southern was able to outshoot the Panthers 14-10, with the Eagles putting just three shots on goal to Georgia State’s five.
“It was a gutsy performance tonight against a tough Georgia Southern team,” head coach Brett Surrency said. “Coach Murphy has instilled an excellent culture with the program and they are a team you must compete with for the entire match. It wasn’t our best game tonight but we found a way to get critical points on the road and I believe that’s what good teams do. We will look forward to a week off and get ourselves ready for Howard next weekend at home.”
The Panthers will return to the GSU Soccer complex for their second Sun Belt match, hosting Howard on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.

WASHINGTON - Appalachian State University men's soccer (3-5-3, 0-0-1 SBC) showcased another stingy effort on defense in its second-straight shutout and tie in a 0-0 draw against Howard (1-10-1, 0-0-1 SBC) on Saturday evening at Greene Stadium.
It's the first time App has blanked an opponent on the road since a 0-0 tie against Hartwick last season, while it's the first time since the prior campaign that Appalachian has collected back-to-back shutouts. It's the third shutout in the past five matches, and the defense has given up just two scores over the last five games (8 in prior five contests).
"It was a hard-fought point on the road in the Sun Belt," head coach Jason O'Keefe said after the conference opener. "We could have gotten more of the game but didn't. Have to give Howard credit for making things difficult for us. We will learn from tonight, recover and get ready for UNCA on Tuesday."
Both teams would come away with a pair of shots at the frame through the 110 minute of action with App firing away on an attempt in each stanza. Marc Pfrogner and Parker Washburn each had a shot on goal but would end in near misses.
Jake Chasteen helped App tally a third clean sheet this season with two saves playing the entire match.
Appalachian will return to action at home on Tuesday against UNC Asheville.

Men’s Soccer Suffers Heartbreaking 1-0 Loss on Late Goal in Sun Belt Opener at Coastal Carolina
CONWAY, SC – In its first Sun Belt Conference match on Sunday, Hartwick's men's soccer team suffered a cruel fate as the Hawks fought off host Coastal Carolina for 88 minutes but conceded a goal with 1:50 remaining in a 1-0 defeat to the Chanticleers.
The winner came off a cross from Carlos Becerra into the Hartwick box. Romario Piggott, in between two Hawk defenders, struck a powerful header to the near post from eight yards away leaving 'Wick keeper Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) no chance.
The loss drops the Hawks to 4-6-1 on the season. The Chanticleers move to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in Sun Belt play.
Wilson was called upon early to make a save on the doorstep just three minutes in. Martin Melchor's header forced a reaction save from the junior keeper to keep the game even. He later made a difficult save on a Frantzdy Pierrot shot that took a deflection with 15 and a half minutes to play in the opening 45 minutes.
Jamie O'Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk HS) and Conor Corboy (Aptos, CA/Mississippi College) each had shots on target for Hartwick in the half but both were saved by Coastal goalkeeper Braulio Linarez-Ortiz.
More chances came in the second half. The first for the Hawks came with 36 minutes to play after they earned a free kick 25 yards from the Chanticleer goal. The Hawks' ensuing near-post effort would be collected by Linares-Ortiz.
Six minutes later, the Hartwick dodged a bullet as Louis Dargent's shot to the near post off a corner was blocked on the goal line by Hawk defender Jonny Carr (Sunderland, England/Monkwearmouth). Coastal had another opportunity nine minutes later as Melchor rifled a shot wide that just missed a sliding Pierrot at the far post.
Hartwick had perhaps its best opportunity of the contest with 13 minutes remaining. Following a corner in the Hawks' end, Coastal was caught in transition allowing a 2v1 with Alex Patz (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca HS) and Corboy closing in on the Chanticleer goal. Patz kept the ball and fired a shot that forced a diving fingertip save from Linarez-Ortiz and the game stayed goalless.
The Chanticleers nearly broke the tie with six and a half minutes showing on the clock. Darius Strambler shot from inside the box was headed for the far corner. It took a deflection off a Coastal player a yard from goal but somehow managed to go wide of the Hawks' net.
The hosts would hold a 14-4 advantage in shots in the game. They generated eight corners to the Hawks' three. Wilson would make five saves in the contest. Linares-Ortiz finished with four.
Hartwick stays in conference for its next game on Saturday, October 14 at Appalachian State. The game kicks off from Boone, NC at 7 p.m.
Panthers Score Twice Late To Down GS Men's Soccer, 3-1
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia State men's soccer team snapped a 1-1 tie with a pair of late second-half goals to pick up a 3-1 Sun Belt Conference victory over host Georgia Southern on Saturday evening at Eagle Field.
The win was the fifth in the last six matches for the Panthers (8-4, 1-0 SBC), while Georgia Southern falls to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the Sun Belt with the loss. The Panthers also claim the first point of the Southern vs. State Rivalry Series with the victory.
Georgia State got on the scoreboard first with a goal off of a set piece in the 33rd minute. Kyle Clinton scored off of a free kick from Liam Fitzimmons from the right side of the box to put the visitors up 1-0. The Panthers would keep that one-goal lead into the break. Shots were fairly even between the two teams as Georgia Southern had six shots at halftime and Georgia State had five.
Georgia Southern found the equalizer just minutes into the second half. A free kick 28 yards out was put home by Javier Carbonell, his second goal of the season, in the 49th minute to make the score 1-1.
The match turned in the 62nd minute as a challenge just inside the box from the Eagles was whistled for a penalty, and Hannas Burmeister successfully converted the kick for the 2-1 lead. Georgia Southern had many chances to find another equalizer but a great header chance by Carbonell went wide in the 79th minute, and back-to-back header shots by Emil Laursen and Blake Wilson each went high in the 87th and 88th minute.
The Panthers put the match away in the 88th minute as Rashid Alarape took the ball off of an Eagle defender in the top of the box, dribbled in and scored with just two minutes and 20 seconds remaining in the contest.
"I thought we had a good grip of the game until that point," Head Coach John Murphy said about the opening goal of the match by Georgia State. "They come down one time and we give away a set piece. They score on the set pice and it just encourages the opposition. It's a little disappointing and obviously Georgia State are a good team, they've proven they can take it to anyone.
"We changed a couple of things personnel-wise, to try and light a fire underneath them," Coach Murphy said about the opening to the second half. "The response mentally was good. But there's no use expending all your energy to get a goal, only to come down at the other end and concede a penalty. Ultimately we didn't create enough in the run of play and the final ball was really poor. We have to find a way to bounce back from this."
The Eagles finished the night with a 14-10 edge in shots. Torgeir Fjaer for Georgia Southern and Yannic Horn for Georgia State each finished with two saves in net. Georgia Southern had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks and the Eagles were called for 14 fouls, compared to 10 for the Panthers. Georgia Southern was offsides four times on the night and Georgia State was offsides three times.
Georgia Southern next begins a three-game road trip on Wednesday, October 11, visiting Campbell for a 3 p.m. non-conference contest in Buies Creek, N.C.
