Sun Belt announces Community Coffee Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week (March 7)
Community Coffee Player of the Week
Jonathan Ortega (Texas State, Sophomore, SS/2B)
Jonathan Ortega had at least two hits in every game last week and posted a .611 (11-for-18) average to help lead Texas State to a three-game sweep of Richmond. He hit clutch home runs in the first two games of the series with the Spiders, which marked the first time in his career he hit homers in back-to-back contests. In the second game with TXST trailing 4-2 in the eighth, he hit a two-out, full-count home run to give the Bobcats the lead in a game they would later win in extra innings. He scored twice in every game against Richmond and also added a run against Sam Houston State. In the first game against the Spiders, he recorded career highs in hits (5), RBI (7) and doubles (2). He also stole a base in all four games and never struck out all week, while drawing three walks.
Community Coffee Pitcher of the Week
Gunner Leger (Louisiana, Junior, LHP)
Junior Gunner Leger posted his second straight quality start limiting Southern Miss to one run on four hits in six innings of work to improve to 2-1 on the season. Leger didn't allow a free pass while striking out a season-best eight strikeouts. Leger did not allow a hit to the No. 1-4 hitters in the Southern Miss lineup as they went a combined 0-10 with a sac bunt and a hit batter. The junior kept the Golden Eagles from posting an extra base hit in the outing.
