Coastal Carolina Falls at George Mason in Season Opener
Fairfax, Va. - Coastal Carolina’s men’s soccer team started the 2017 season at George Mason and did not start the season the way they had hoped in a narrow 2-1 loss.
It was a match which saw the Chanticleers (0-1-0) control the game from the opening kick, but could not find the back of the net in the one-goal loss.
It only took one kick from George Mason’s (1-0-0) Tunde Akinlosotu on a header in the seventh minute to give the host a 1-0 lead. Not only was it GM’s first shot of the game, it was only one of three in the opening 45 minutes.
Even though the Chants were attacking the goal it finally took first-year player Yazeed Matthews picking up a loose ball in front of the net to even the match at one in the 38th minute.
The half ended with the two teams even at one even as CCU outshot GMU 13-3 and 5-1 in shots on goal.
The second half was much the same, but again, GM took the lead and had the eventual match-winner off the foot of Henning Kirks in the 60th minute.
CCU continued to pepper the goal, but were unsuccessful in the second half of scoring. CCU finished the game out shooting the Patriots 20-6.
The Chants will also be on the road in their next outing as they travel to Washington, D.C. to face the Hoyas of Georgetown.

Monmouth Edges GS Men's Soccer, 1-0, In Season Opener
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Monmouth's Colin Stripling headed in the match-winner in the 69th minute to give the Hawks a 1-0 collegiate men's soccer victory over Georgia Southern in both team's 2017 season opener at the Aaron Olitsky Tournament in Charleston, S.C.
The Hawks improve to 1-0 on the season with the victory in the first meeting between the two teams in school history. Georgia Southern falls to 0-1. The Eagles will wrap up action in the tournament on Sunday, taking on Furman at 4:00 p.m. at Patriots Point in Charleston.
A scoreless first half saw a flurry of activity from the Eagles at the end of the period as Adam Abdelloui had a pair of shots and Javier Carbonell's shot in the 42nd minute was saved off the line by Monmouth's Striping. Georgia Southern went into halftime of the match with a 6-3 edge in shots.
Monmouth broke the scoreless deadlock in the 69th minute as a Jake Areman free kick from right of the box found Stripling in front of the net for the lunging header and the goal, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The best chance for the equalizer for the Eagles came in the 86th minute as Alhaji Tambadu pounced on a loose ball in front of the net, drove into the box but fired a shot just high.
"It's a tough result," Head Coach John Murphy said. "I thought we were the team that had the most of it in regards to possession, with regards to flowing and connecting. But we knew Monmouth was going to be tough and resilient. They scored on a set piece that we shouldn't have given away, and we need to learn the value of possession with purpose. We pass the ball around in the back, get caught out of possession, give away a foul and they score from it.
"It's disappointing, but there are a lot of good things we can take away from the match," Murphy said. "I thought we played with a fluid style. Sometimes the final ball is lacking that final touch, but if we play with that energy and attitude all season, you're going to see the results we're looking for."
Georgia Southern finished the match with a 12-9 edge in shots, tallying six in each half. Robert Flott made one save in 90 minutes of action for the Eagles, while Bobby Edwards improved to 1-0 in net for the Hawks, making three saves for the shutout. Each team had five corner kicks on the day and Georgia Southern committed 13 fouls, compared to nine for Monmouth. Each team was offsides once.

BOONE, N.C. - Newly acquainted Appalachian State University men’s soccer student-athlete Michael Davidson (Weddington, N.C./Weddington) notched a goal in his first-career match, but it wasn’t enough in the season opener against Old Dominion on Friday evening at ODU Soccer Complex.
The Monarchs (1-0) needed a late goal in the 84th minute of the match to push past Appalachian (0-1) for the victory, 2-1.
Both teams played to a 0-0 first half despite an aggressive ODU team that took 11 shots, four of which were on goal. Jake Chasteen (Blowing Rock, N.C./Watauga) was able to come away with all four saves to keep the clean sheet in the first frame.
It wasn’t until the first two minutes into the second period that the hosts would score as Brandon Perdue gave his team the 1-0 lead. Appalachian quickly struck back just 53 seconds later when Reed Hunnicutt (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) played a free kick into the middle of the box that found his freshman teammate for the score.
With the match at a 1-1 stalemate, the Apps couldn’t get any more momentum on offense, while Marc Pfrogner (Aurach, Germany/Gymnasium Feuchtwangen) was the only Mountaineer that was able to get a shot at the target the rest of the way.
Appalachian will have to make the quick turnaround on Sunday for a 7 p.m. match against VCU in Richmond.
