RICHMOND, Va. –– The offense was out in full force for Appalachian State University men's soccer (1-1), as three different student-athletes scored en route to a 3-2 triumph over VCU (0-2) on Sunday evening at Backers Stadium.
The Mountaineers' three goal scorers in Felix Kollmannthaler, Zeiko Harris and Austin Hill all scored their first-career goal for the Apps.
The three goals were the highest since tallying three against USC Upstate last season, while it was also the highest scoring output on the road since 2015 when the Black and Gold scored three goals against Presbyterian.
"Fantastic result," head coach Jason O'Keefe said after the win. "VCU is a championship level program that will compete for the A-10. They've been in the finals for two years in a row. Every player was all in with a complete effort and showed a refuse to lose mentality, which is what we needed this weekend. We look forward to getting home, regenerating and hosting two massive home games this weekend."
Appalachian wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard with two goals in the first 16 minutes of the match. Kollmannthaler got things started with his first goal of the season to break the 0-0 start before Harris gave App the 2-0 advantage when Daniel Avila found the freshman for one of his two assists.
After coming out of the half with a 2-0 edge, VCU cut the deficit to one after Ulrik Edvarsen hit a header off the crossbar. However, the Mountaineers gave themselves some cushion when Avila fed Hill for a shot to the far post, extending the lead to two goals.
VCU would score once more in the contest, but it wouldn't be enough, leading to Appalachian's victory. The Mountaineers took advantage of their opportunities as all four of their shots were on target, which three turned into goals. Jake Chasteen started between the posts and collected two saves.
App finished second in what turned into a round-robin tournament. For their performances, Harris, Hill and Jeremy Tshongo were named to the all-tournament team.
Appalachian will aim to keep the momentum going next weekend with a pair of home matches, starting with Central Arkansas on Friday at 5 p.m.

CHARLESTON, SC - Furman University's Cole McLagen scored the match winner in the 12th minute to give the Paladins a 1-0 victory over Georgia Southern men's soccer on Sunday afternoon at the Aaron Olitsky Tournament in Charleston, S.C.
Furman improves to 2-0 on the season after picking up the 3-2 win over host College of Charleston on Friday, while the Eagles fall to 0-2 after a second straight 1-0 setback, following Friday's loss to Monmouth. Georgia Southern returns to action on Friday, September 1, traveling to Jacksonville, Fla., for an 8 p.m. matchup at the University of North Florida.
The Eagles initiated the game's action in the seventh minute as Blake Wilson's went wide. Furman earned a corner kick in the 11th minute, then less than a minute later, McLagen struck home a cross from Conor Sloan for the game's only goal.
Wilson had the best chance for an equalizer in the first half for the Eagles, but Furman's Ben Hale saved a header from the senior in the 31st minute. Georgia Southern held a 4-3 edge in shots at the break, and also had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Paladins opened the second half looking for the two-goal advantage, but Robert Flott turned away a pair of shots from Furman's Connor Hubbard in a three-minute span to keep it a one-goal match.
A header by the Eagles' Alhaji Tambadu in the 69th minute would be the last shot by the Eagles in the contest as Furman would see out the one-goal win.
"Despite the result, the performance was much better today against a very good Furman squad," Head Coach John Murphy said. "They scored against the run of play and, unfortunately, we were not able to find the goal to get back int the game. Both Justin [Little] and Gonzalo [Talavera] were outstanding throughout the weekend from the back, while Victor [Gustafsson] and Alhaji put in great shifts again today as central midfielders."
Sophomore Justin Little and freshman Gonzalo Talavera, who both played all 180 minutes of this weekend's matches at the central defender position, were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Furman finished the game with a slim 7-6 edge in shots. Flott made three saves in net for the Eagles, while Hale picked up the clean sheet with one save. Georgia Southern held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks and the Eagles were whistled for 12 fouls, compared to 11 for the Paladins. Individually, Wilson had three of the Eagles' six shots on the day.
"There is plenty for us to work on after this weekend, but we have much to build upon as well," Murphy said. "We will take the week to recover, recalibrate and prepare for North Florida on Friday."
