MT. PLEASANT, S.C.- The Georgia State men’s soccer team earned its second-straight shutout in a 1-0 victory over College of Charleston Tuesday night. Junior Javen Palmer scored the game-winner, his first career goal for GSU.

With the win, the Panthers improved to 6-3 while the Cougars fell to 2-5-1.

The team fired just two shots in the first half, focusing on defensive play. College of Charleston took 11 shots in the first 45 minutes, with senior Yannic Horn keeping the team off the board with four saves.

The Panthers got on the board quickly coming out of halftime, as Palmer scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 55-minute mark.

The Cougars led the shot count 18-7, but only put four on target against GSU. Lukas Joyner led Georgia State in shots with three, putting one on goal.

“We’re very proud of the guys getting a tough 1-0 win on the road tonight,” head coach Brett Surrency said. “College of Charleston is a difficult team to play against and it took a gritty performance by the boys to get the win tonight.”

The Panthers will return to the field on Saturday at Jacksonville for the final match in a three-game road stretch. Kickoff at Southern Oak Stadium is set for 7 p.m.

DURHAM, N.C.  - Appalachian State University men's soccer displayed a gritty effort in a 1-0 setback to No. 19 Duke on Tuesday evening at Koskinen Stadium.

Appalachian (3-5-1) held its second ranked ACC opponent ( No. 4 Wake Forest - 9/12) in Duke (7-1-1) to a scoreless first half despite the Blue Devils firing away on 10 shots and three shots on goal in the stanza. The Mountaineer defense bent but didn't break for the first 57 minutes until Brian White gave the hosts their only goal of the game to take the lead, 1-0. The one goal scored by Duke ties a season low at home this season.

"Another game where we didn't get what we wanted, but we there were many positives that we will take from the game and build on," head coach Jason O'Keefe said following the match. "Duke is a well-coached team that is enjoying a great season. We will recover, get back to work tomorrow and prepare for another well-coached squad in High Point, who is coming off their best performance of the season against UNC Asheville."

With less than a minute left in the contest, App had possession on offense including a corner kick with 14 seconds left in the match, but the offense wouldn't get a shot off. John Walrath registered the team's only shot on goal in the opening stanza, while the Black and Gold tallied three shots on the evening.

Jake Chasteen was active all night, as he came away with four saves on Duke's 19 shots. Aside from allowing three scores to then-No. 4 WF, the defense has allowed one or zero goals in six of the past seven matches and six of nine matches overall.

App State will return to action and aim to get into the winning column when it hosts in-state foe High Point on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Ted Mackorell.

Men’s Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision to St. Francis Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY – Hartwick fell 2-1 to host St. Francis Brooklyn on Tuesday night at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 5. The Terriers scored once in each half to take a two-goal lead before the Hawks climbed back into the match with 15 minutes ago. ’Wick couldn’t get the tying goal despite a couple of chances down the stretch as it fell to 4-5 on the season.

Ali Tounkara broke the ice for the Terriers at the 31:10 mark as he took a pass from Amir Islami and fired home for a 1-0 lead. It would mark the lone goal in the half with St. Francis Brooklyn controlling play with a 10-2 advantage in shots.

The second half was a different story as the Hawks dominated the possession. However, it was the Terriers, against the run of play, who would get the opening goal of the second frame. Dominick Falanga received a cross from Federico Curbelo at the top of the 18-yard box and crushed a ball into the far corner for the 2-0 lead. It would mark the only shot of the half for the hosts.

Hartwick, which out-shot the Terriers 9-1 in the final 45 minutes, pressed for its opening goal and finally was rewarded at 74:15. A free kick from Hamish Ritchie (Aberdeen, Scotland/Aboyne Academy) found Johnny McBeth (Glasgow, Scotland/Upper Iowa University) on the far post. His far-post header floated over the head of Terrier keeper Roberto Bazzichetto and was touched in by Sun Belt Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week Jamie O’Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk HS) for his seventh goal of the year.

McBeth would have a long-range effort knocked down by Bazzichetto with four and a half minutes to go in the match. Bazzichetto pounced on the ball before O’Grady had a chance at a rebound. O’Grady had the final chance with a header on frame with 30 seconds to play but the Terrier keeper made a comfortable save and secured the win.

Both teams had 11 shots in the contest. Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) stopped three shots for Hartwick in goal. Bezzichetto finished the night with six saves for St. Francis Brooklyn.

Hartwick returns to Elmore for its next game on Saturday before getting the conference slate underway. The Hawks host winless Bryant (0-7) at 5 p.m.
