NEW ORLEANS – In a vote of the men’s golf coaches following the conclusion of the season, Georgia Southern's Steven Fisk was named the Sun Belt Men’s Golfer of the Year, Max Catherine of ULM was named the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, Morgan Deneen of Coastal Carolina was named Newcomer of the Year, and Coastal Carolina coach Jim Garren was tabbed Sun Belt Men's Golf Coach of the Year. In addition, the 2018 All-Sun Belt Men’s Golf Team was announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Fisk, a junior from Stockbridge, Ga., led the Sun Belt with a 69.47 average score, just ahead of teammate and fellow First-Team selection, Jake Storey. Fisk has competed in 30 rounds and 10 tournaments - with two wins to his credit. Fisk shot 72 or better in 25 of 30 rounds this season and finished in the top-10 in seven of 10 events, including three top-five finishes. He was awarded Sun Belt Golfer of the Week three times this season and became the 13th player in NCAA golf history to shoot a 60 in a round, which was a new school and course record.
Max Catherine was the highest rated freshman in the league as he led all Sun Belt freshman with a 73.36 stroke average this season and a season-low round of 69 with a win. He competed in 33 rounds for the Warhawks this season and 11 tournaments, including a top-10 finish at the Sun Belt championship.
Morgan Deneen was named the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year. The 2018 Sun Belt Men’s Golf Individual Champion joined the Chanticleers as a walk-on this season and shot a Sun Belt championship record total of 203, including a championship low round of 63. He had five rounds in the 60s this season and finished 12th overall in scoring average in the league (73.15).
Jim Garren led the Chanticleers squad that finished second in the league in scoring average (290.12) and earned the 2018 Sun Belt men's golf team championship in match play. Garren's team swept through three rounds of the Sun Belt championship to finish in first overall in the team standings at seven-under par. CCU claimed the title in the match play finals by defeating Georgia Southern, 4-1.
The team title for the Chanticleers was their first team title since joining the Sun Belt and the first Coach of the Year honor for Garren.
