Upsets Headline First Day at Sun Belt Women's Tennis Championship

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – The first day of the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championship featured a couple of upsets as No. 6 Georgia State and No. 8 Georgia Southern advance to the semifinals on Friday along with No. 2 South Alabama and No. 4 UTA.
 
The Panthers and Jaguars square off in one semifinal, while the Eagles and Mavericks meet in the other. Due to impending weather in the area, Friday's semifinals are rescheduled to one hour earlier at 9 a.m. ET on the indoor courts at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. The semifinals are still set for live coverage on ESPN+ with Matt Stewart and Ken Thomas on the call.
 
The first day's last match to finish was the most exciting one as Georgia Southern soared to a 4-3 triumph over No. 1 Appalachian State. The Mountaineers held a 2-0 lead then a 3-2 lead until the Eagles pulled off two three-set thrillers in singles to steal the victory. The Eagles had freshman Luisa Hrda win at No. 4 to tie the score at 3-3 followed by sophomore Mila Hartig sealing the upset at No. 5 with a 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-1 victory.
 
Georgia State opened the championship with a 4-1 over No. 3 Coastal Carolina on the strength of singles wins from juniors Damira Muminovic, Andreea Stanescu and Anastasia Grosheva and senior Lara Vovk. The Chanticleers took the doubles point to grab the early lead before the Panthers swept at the Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 spots. Vovk clinched the match at No. 4 with a 7-6(4), 6-2 victory.
 
South Alabama cruised to a 4-0 sweep over No. 7 South Alabama in the second morning match. Senior Alexandria Stiteler secured the win at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 7-5 victory. The win propelled the Jaguars to 20 wins for the fifth-straight season.
 
UTA took care No. 5 ULM 4-1 to open up the afternoon session. The Mavericks raced out to a 3-0 lead before the Warhawks got their lone point on freshman Emilia Alfaro's win at No. 1 singles. UTA closed out the win at the No. 5 spot as freshman Liz Chileno toughed out a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win.
