FOLEY, Ala. – Georgia State senior Jimena Cabrero provided the game-winner as the No. 8 seeded Panthers defeated No. 9 seed Southern Miss in game two of the 2022 Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Tournament at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala.
Georgia State (8-6-5) advances to face first-seeded Georgia Southern at 4 p.m. CT Wednesday. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
Southern Miss (2-10-4) outshot Georgia State 8-5 in the second half with three shots on frame in the match. The Golden Eagles also led the Panthers in saves 3-2, as the potential equalizers failed to find the back of the net.
The Panthers found the game-winner in the 57
th minute as Cabrero netted her first goal of the season to advance Georgia State in the tournament. A break-away opportunity saw Alondra Nieves pass a through ball that found the feet of Cabrero who secured the goal in the lower right corner.
The Golden Eagles held possession in the attacking quarter for 24 percent of their possession as the Panthers managed 15 percent inside the 18.
